Plenty of new and returning shows this week, plus The Golden Globes, which will have people (perhaps unfairly) comparing Jimmy Fallon to previous hosts Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. A side note, the most amusing thing about the return of CBC’s Schitt’s Creek is hearing Ben Mulroney saying the name of the series in a promo for CTV’s Your Morning when Eugene Levy was scheduled to appear this past week. Sunday
The 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards – Red Carpet at 7pm, Awards from 8 to 11pm on NBC/CTV
Jimmy Fallon hosts this year’s awards, which are highlighted by Meryl Streep receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. E! also has its usual pre-show festivities from 6 to 8pm and an after-party from 11pm to midnight.
Nashville – 8 to 10pm on CMT – 5th Season Premiere
This show, which was rescued from cancellation on ABC, premiered last Thursday on W, but it’s also running on CMT on Sunday nights.
Monday
Pure – 9:01 to 10pm on CBC – Series Premiere
Ryan Robbins (Charlie Connor on Battlestar Galactica) stars as Noah Funk, a Mennonite Pastor working undercover in an organized crime network to battle drug trafficking in his community. A.J. Buckley, Peter Outerbridge and Rosie Perez also star in this Canadian drama.
Big Fan – 10 to 11pm on ABC – Series Premiere (Two back-to-back episodes)
This game show pits fans of particular stars against each other and the stars themselves. This first show features Matthew McConaughey, and football star Aaron Rogers follows in the second. It’s based on a segment from Jimmy Kimmel Live and is hosted by Conan O’Brien’s sidekick, Andy Richter.
American Dad – 10pm on Much – 12th Season Premiere
I Live With Models – 10:30pm on Much – Series Premiere
This British sitcom follows the life of Tommy Bishop (David Hoffman), a regular guy who is discovered as a hand model and winds up living in an apartment with three beautiful young models in Miami.
Tuesday
Schitt’s Creek – 9pm on CBC – 3rd Season Premiere
Workin’ Moms – 9:30 on CBC – Series Premiere
Catherine Reitman, Jessalyn Wanlim, Dani Kind and Juno Rinaldi star in this sitcom about the challenges facing working moms. The first episode, for instance, deals with returning to work after maternity leave and postpartum depression.
Taboo – 10 to 11:30pm on FX – Miniseries Premiere
This eight-part British miniseries stars Tom Hardy, Oona Chaplin and Jonathan Price in the story of a man believed to be long dead returning home from Africa to claim a mysterious legacy from his father.
A Place to Call Home – 10 to 11pm on BBC Canada – 4th Season Premiere
Being Mary Jane – 9 to 10:02pm on BET – 4th Season Premiere
Wednesday
X Company – 9pm on CBC – 3rd Season Premiere
Jeff & Some Aliens – 10:30pm on Much – Series Premiere
This half-hour animated sitcom is a spinoff of a sketch on the Comedy Central series TripTank, where a trio of aliens come to earth and find Jeff, whom they consider to be the most average man on earth. The visitors plan to base their decision on whether humanity should be wiped out on Jeff’s behaviour.
Thursday
Taking The Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America – 9 to 11pm on ABC
This two-hour special celebrates the opening of the Smithsonian`s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.

Colony – 10pm on Bravo – 2nd Season Premiere
Adam Ruins Everything – 10pm on Much
Comedian Adam Conover debunks common-held perceptions of day-to-day life in this comedy series. In the first episode, he argues against giving your leftover canned goods to food banks and looks at the problems created by shoe companies giving away free merchandise.
Karaoke Showdown – 10:30pm on Spike – Series Premiere
In this obvious ripoff of James Corden’s Carpool Karoake, host Craig Robinson picks up unsuspecting passengers to play karaoke games for cash prizes.
