It’s “back to school” for CANADA’S WORST HANDYMAN! A new class of disastrous DIYers will be renovating a frat house in a southern Ontario university town when the fifth instalment of the hit series premieres Monday, May 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel. CANADA’S WORST HANDYMAN has tracked down five new offenders: do-it-yourselfers with reno ambitions that so exceed their abilities that they’ve left monumental home improvement disasters in their wake. The gruelling seven-part series reveals how and where it all goes wrong when DIY enthusiasm and ineptitude collide. Guided by series host and writer Andrew Younghusband, this season’s “class” of reckless renovators are shown the error of their ways and offered the expert coaching and tools to help them improve. But will the tutorials offered at Reno Rehab earn any of them a passing grade? And could you do any better? If you’re handier with a hammer than this season’s participants, visit worsthandyman.ca starting in May to test your reno skills playing the Frat House Frenzy game for a chance to win one of seven weekly prizes.
For four seasons of CANADA’S WORST HANDYMAN, disastrous DIYers have been put through their paces renovating dilapidated apartments, constructing eco-friendly sheds, converting a rundown Victorian mansion into a B & B, and overhauling a cottage-country lodge. In Season 5, five new hapless home renovators are heading back to school to transform a frat house. Nominated for their DIY deficits by family or friends, the participants are put though their paces at the Handyman Rehabilitation Centre – this time, a fraternity house at a university in southern Ontario – by carpentry expert Gail Prosser-Craig and contractor Geoff Woodmansey. Together, and with Younghusband, they will guide and evaluate the participants and judge each episode’s projects to name the “Most Improved Handyman” and the “Worst Handyman” of the week.
At the frat house, each handyman – along with their nominator – will attempt to renovate a bedroom and transform the space with their own distinct design. Briefed on what tasks are in store for them, each handyman shops for the tools and all of the building supplies they believe will be needed to complete the challenges while at rehab. In addition to their individual bedroom overhauls, the participants must work together as a group to complete a total kitchen renovation in the frat house.
Across seven episodes, watch as the five handymen take on a barrage of basic DIY challenges in a bid to become fully rehabilitated, learning plumbing, building custom furniture and even tackling electrical. Once the projects are completed and the doors to the Frat House finally swing open again, one unlucky – and least-improved – renovator will receive the ultimate title of “Canada’s Worst Handyman.”
This season’s class of handymen – most of whom don’t know their screwdriver from their stud finder – include:
• Angela, from Spruce Grove, AB, is obsessed with decorating and redecorating – but most of these projects leave much to be desired! She was nominated by her husband, Matt, who is simply disgusted by her poor workmanship and easily vocalizes his disapproval.
• Cory, from Burn’s Lake, BC, was nominated by his fiancée, Kim. Cory has a short temper and rushes through projects just to get them done. Kim is easily annoyed by Cory’s attitude and often gets upset and pouts. Cory is taking on the HANDYMAN challenge to prove his fiancée wrong.
• Deen, from High Prairie, AB, is clueless when it comes to handiwork. Deen doesn’t know the name of tools – let alone how to use them! He was nominated by his twin brother, Doug, who is tired of coming to Deen’s rescue to finish the projects.
• Matt, from Elmsdale, NS, is a self-described hillbilly. He is probably the most experienced handyman on the series – ever! He built a house from the ground up… except it’s crooked and nothing is done correctly or actually attached as it should be. His buddy, Keith, wants Matt to slow down and do things properly.
• Simon, from North Sydney, NS, should be enjoying his retirement. The problem is he has a passion for renovations but no skill. Simon rushes to finish projects without taking the time and patience to do the job right. He has been nominated by his wife, Linda, who has barred him from doing any projects on the main floor of their home.
In the season’s first episode, “The Frat Pack,” the handymen discover what lies in store at the Rehabilitation Centre. After learning what the challenges will be, they must purchase everything they need to complete the tasks ahead of them. Then, they must construct a simple, sturdy work bench. Finally, this inept group of handymen attempts to demolish the kitchen collectively – with unbelievable results! By the end of this episode, one Handyman claims the title of “Most Improved,” while a lack of patience and caring ensures that another is nailed with the title of “Worst of the Week.”
