But James, his brother, is still missing. Now an official police employee, John is forbidden from using departmental resources to look for James or uncover what he was investigating. But John won’t stop, and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder) – a puzzle must be solved, and a husband and father brought home. As they continue to investigate, one masquerade may have ended, but a new one is just beginning…

Their unprecedented clear-up rate in solving murders has brought Janie her much-coveted promotion to Detective Inspector. And she now has official help from John as Mid Wales Police’s new civilian consultant. But Janie’s growing discontent with her new role. Health and safety briefings, police strategy meetings and the arrival of her estranged father – the charming and unreliable Michael – forces Janine to question her life choices. Meanwhile, a murder on the set of an epic Games of Thrones-style production reignites John’s passion for acting. Could he make a return? And the pair’s personal relationship remains fragile following John’s relationship with Yvonne – Janie’s mum.

A limitation on police resources is making everything more difficult and threatening the future of Blackthorn Station. Beyond the station doors, a rise of anti-immigration violence is bringing riots to the streets and the toxic legacy of the Troubles still runs deep. Faced with chaos on the streets and pressure from above, the section is forced to radically reconsider the way they work – and the place they call home.
