Discovery Delivers First-Hand Accounts of Hurricane Matthew With Original Canadian Documentary HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH, Premiering May 26

In the past two decades, hurricanes along the North American coastline have grown more powerful and destructive than ever. Discovery’s Original Canadian Documentary special HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH, premiering Sunday, May 26 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, recounts the catastrophe created by Hurricane Matthew, beginning in the Caribbean, all the way up to Canada.

The fourth installment in the ROGUE EARTH series of original documentaries, the new one-hour special tells the gripping stories of real people desperately struggling to save their homes and neighbours, against blistering gale force winds and relentless sheets of rain in the Fall of 2016.

With raw and never-before-seen mobile phone footage, interviews with experts who risked their lives to gather storm data, and commentary from Weather Channel Senior Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross, HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH showcases the bravery and generosity of individuals impacted by the storm, as they share anecdotes of using drones to assist in rescue missions and gathering supplies for people in need.

In Atlantic Canada, the devastating after-effects of Hurricane Matthew were powerfully felt by communities across the region. On October 9, 2016, curtains of rain, tropical storm force winds, and power outages left parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador drenched and in the dark for several days. With over 200 millilitres of rain over the course of two days, rampaging floods caused road washouts, school closures, and states of emergency throughout Atlantic cities, resulting in over $100 million in insured damages.

Despite stories of profound tragedy, HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH highlights the true tales of resilience, teamwork, and hope left in Hurricane Matthew’s wake. Survivors reflect on the immense losses they experienced, but also share their determination to rebuild their lives and better prepare for future disasters, while experts caution the importance of developing stronger infrastructure and a deeper understanding of natural disasters.

HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH represents the newest addition to Discovery’s ROGUE EARTH documentary series, which focuses on the terrifying true accounts of communities caught in the middle of catastrophic weather events. Previous ROGUE EARTH documentaries include: ALBERTA FLOODS: ROGUE EARTH (2018), FORT MAC WILDFIRE: ROGUE EARTH (2017) and TORNADOES: ROGUE EARTH (2017).

Subscribers can access live streaming of HURRICANES: ROGUE EARTH through the Discovery app. The special will also be available on-demand for free on the Discovery app and Discovery.ca following the broadcast.
