Tapping Into The News Headlines: The Passionate Eye Airs Documentaries Connected To The G8/G20 Summits, The Anniversary of Michael Jackson’s Death and The Queen’s Visite To Canada

With the G8/G20 summits set to begin in Huntsville, Ont., and Toronto at the end of the month, CBC News Network’s THE PASSIONATE EYE airs encore screenings of three timely documentaries that take on hot topics that may or may not be discussed by the world leaders, but will most likely be top-of-mind for protesters.

Future Earth: 2025, airing Sunday, June 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, is a stark look, with stunning CGI visuals, at what earth might be like if we deplete one of our primary resources – water. Future Earth: Addicted to Power, Sunday, June 20, following at 11 p.m. ET/PT, details how our reliance on fossil fuels is costing the earth dearly. And Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, which airs Sunday, June 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, looks at the shocking, scandal-plagued collapse of the energy company – from shredded documents to private equity funds and false accounting.

As the first anniversary of Michael Jackson’s sudden death draws near, THE PASSIONATE EYE airs an encore presentation of Michael Jackson: What Happened? on Monday, June 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. In the aftermath of Michael Jackson’s acquittal on charges of child molestation, writer and self-proclaimed Jackson fan Jacques Peretti sets out to unravel the reason for the pop superstar’s spectacular fall from grace. In his quest, he speaks to a number of Jackson’s intimates. They include his manager of nearly two decades, who devised Jackson’s King of Pop moniker and witnessed his increasingly erratic behavior, and one of Jackson’s oldest friends, who claims the former child star was never beaten by his father and that the superstar created his “Wacko Jacko” persona for media attention.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip arrive in Canada on June 28 for a nine-day visit with stops in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba and, on Canada Day, the National Capital Region. CBC News Network’s THE PASSIONATE EYE commemorates this occasion with encore screenings of two documentaries: Queen Elizabeth: Born to Reign, airing Monday, June 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and Royal Riders on Saturday, July 3 at 7 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Queen Elizabeth: Born to Reign documents pivotal moments in the monarch’s life and looks ahead to the future. Provocative questions asked include: Can the Royal Family, so often caught up in scandal, survive? If Charles becomes king, will Camilla, once so despised by the British people, be their queen? Or will Charles be bypassed in favour of his popular and charismatic son William?

Royal Riders explores the Royal Family’s passion for riding and their horses. >From the Queen to her daughter, Princess Anne, and her eldest granddaughter, Zara Phillips, a champion equestrian, all the royals are united by their love of everything equine. Through interviews and archival footage, Royal Riders captures an unknown side of the Royal Family.
