Following the success of its debut season, Let’s Make a Sci-Fi, CBC Podcasts and Kelly&Kelly’s hit comedy podcast, returns for its second season: Let’s Make A Rom-Com on Tuesday, February 14. Hosts and comedians Maddy Kelly, Mark Chavez, and Ryan Beil are back, inviting listeners to follow along as they try to write a successful script for a romantic comedy feature film. At the end of the eight-episode series, actors will bring their pitch to life—and audiences can judge whether sparks fly. The first episode premieres on CBC Listen and everywhere podcasts are available on Valentine’s Day; new episodes will be released every Monday.
Maddy Kelly helms the second season, introducing Beil and Chavez to a new world of Hollywood experts to guide their creative process. Let’s Make A Rom-Com features interviews with screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You), writer-director Ol Parker (Ticket to Paradise, Mama Mia II), comedian Phoebe Robinson (Everything’s Trash), and actor Karan Soni (Deadpool, Always Be My Maybe), among others. Episodes will focus on topics including writing iconic “meet cutes,” grand romantic gestures, believable break-ups, and hilarious, humanizing side characters.
Internationally acclaimed, Let’s Make A Sci-Fi was highlighted as a “Best Podcast of 2022” by both The New Yorker and Vulture Magazine. With its original blend of riff comedy, concrete industry advice, and collaborative storytelling, Let’s Make A Rom-Com retains all the features that made its first season standout. This hilarious adventure into a beloved genre will delight fans and newcomers alike and pull back the curtain on how Hollywood’s most famous love stories actually get made.
Let’s Make A Rom-Com’s unique format is a hallmark of production studio Kelly&Kelly, who are known for their innovative approach to audio storytelling. Later this year, Kelly&Kelly will release the first-ever podcast sitcom, also written by Maddy Kelly.
“A fresh approach to storytelling is important to us, both on the level of content and structure, across all of our projects,” says Pat Kelly, Kelly&Kelly’s Head of Development. “One of the key struggles in Let’s Make A Rom-Com is how to adapt the most well-worn genre clichés into something completely new and yet entirely believable. We can’t wait for audiences to hear Maddy, Mark, and Ryan’s hilarious take on romance.”
“Working together on the first season with Kelly&Kelly, we all knew that Ryan, Mark and Maddy have great chemistry – and we’re thrilled to tap into that once more with Let’s Make a Rom-Com. By breaking down and rebuilding another popular genre, there’s no doubt that hilarity will ensue, just as love conquers all. We look forward to sharing the new season with romance and comedy fans alike,” said Arif Noorani, Director, CBC Podcasts.
Listeners can expect to fall in love all over again; Let’s Make A Rom-Com launches on Tuesday, February 14 on CBC Listen and everywhere podcasts are available. Subsequent episodes will be released every Monday, with the finale, and final script reveal, debuting on April 3, 2023.
