The stars of the tennis world will be shining on TSN and TSN2 with two weeks of world-class tennis action from the men’s and women’s ROGERS CUP presented by National Bank events – the only Canadian stops on the ATP and WTA Tours. Coverage swings into action with the men’s tournament beginning August 9 at Toronto’s Rexall Centre at York University and continues with the women’s tournament beginning August 16 at Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium. TSN and TSN2’s coverage consists of weekday afternoon and evening sessions (see complete broadcast schedule below).
TSN’s Rod Black will handle play-by-play for both events, with Peter Burwash as analyst for the men’s event and Tracy Austin for the women’s. Robert Bettauer will be courtside for both events. SPORTSCENTRE will have features and daily highlights from both the men’s and women’s events while TSN.ca provides the latest news, scores and photo galleries along with highlights and matches on-demand.
This year’s men’s ROGERS CUP tournament will take place in Toronto, and it has all the makings of a classic. Defending champion Andy Murray looks to defend his title, while world #1 Rafael Nadal looks to continue his success in 2010 following wins at both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this summer. Both Nadal and Murray will be in tough as the top 44 players in the world will participate, including legendary Roger Federer and 2007 ROGERS CUP champion Novak Djokovic.
The women’s event in Montreal features the top 43 of 45 ranked players in the world, including defending ROGERS CUP champion Elena Dementieva. Standing between Dementieva and a second-consecutive title are #2-ranked Jelena Jankovic, #3-ranked Caroline Wozniacki and #4-ranked Venus Williams. Other notable names in this year’s field include #52-ranked Aleksandra Wozniak from Blainville, QC, fan-favourite Maria Sharapova, and former ROGERS CUP champions Ana Ivanovic, Kim Clijsters.
The ROGERS CUP is the third-oldest ongoing tournament on the tennis calendar behind only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
