Christine Sinclair blazed the trail for Canadian soccer players on the international stage, and following in her footsteps, young superstar Jessie Fleming is making her own mark on the sport after signing with Chelsea of the Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League earlier this year. Now, the newest Canadian soccer icon can be seen nationally across Canada, as Sportsnet has signed a deal of its own, acquiring the exclusive national broadcast rights to the Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League (FA WSL) – the highest league of women’s football in England.
Sportsnet will broadcast 50 regular season games, plus the semifinals and finals of the Women’s FA Cup.
“National interest in soccer, particularly women’s soccer, continues to grow given the success of Canadian players internationally. Sportsnet is excited to showcase the top level quality of FA WSL and its athletes across our platforms, and help extend its reach to new audiences across the country,” said Bart Yabsley, President, Sportsnet.
Starting this weekend on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 9:30 a.m. ET / 6:30 a.m. PT, Canadian National Team member Janine Beckie stars in Aston Villa vs. Manchester City, as England’s top teams take to the pitch. Several fixtures will be available live each week on SN NOW, and select games also airing on Sportsnet’s TV channels.
Comprised of 12 teams, the FA WSL is entering its 10th season, with Chelsea currently holding the league trophy. The broadcast schedule will be updated weekly on sportsnet.ca. Click here for full TV listings.
