Imagine if the makings of a Greek salad cost a whopping $50! In Inuvik, that’s true. The solution to high food costs? Transform the local hockey arena into a huge community greenhouse.
Coleen Rajotte, the award-winning Cree/Metis producer/filmmaker and novice gardener, hosts Vitality Gardening a smart, practical “how to” series for viewers interested in taking charge of what they eat.
It seems like everyone is planting a garden these days. In tough economic times, people are looking for ways to save money. They’re also more concerned about health issues than ever before and asking, “Where is my food coming from” and “is it safe?”
Each week on Vitality Gardening, Coleen, along with a team of gardening experts, takes the audience through simple, easy to follow instructions on how to grow their own healthier organic foods and harvest traditional foods and medicines from the wild. Learning as she goes, Coleen eventually is able to transform her front yard into a garden of indigenous medical plants.
Episode subjects include community gardening, northern gardening, composting, gardening therapy, berry picking, harvesting wild medicines, traditional mound-style Aboriginal gardening, seed saving, storing food for the winter, and creating a harvest feast.
Coleen Rajotte was the first Aboriginal woman on network news. She started her television career at the CBC and quickly developed a reputation for her powerful, documentary films, and for her popular lifestyle show Vitality on APTN. She was recently awarded the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal for her work as an aboriginal filmmaker and role model.
