CBC and its production partners were recognized with 74 Canadian Screen Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television at this week’s series of virtual presentations, following 309 nominations earlier this year. The Canadian Screen Awards honour excellence in scripted, unscripted, documentary and news programming across television, film and digital.
Highlights include:
- Seven awards overall for CBC News, with two for THE NATIONAL including Best Live News Special and Best National Reporter, and one each for THE FIFTH ESTATE (Best News or Information Series), MARKETPLACE (Best Host or Interviewer, News or Information) and CBC News Network’s POWER AND POLITICS for Best Talk Program or Series. CBC NEWS VANCOUVER AT 6 and CBC NEWS TORONTO AT 6 also each won for Best Local Reporter and Best News Anchor Local respectively.
- CBC’s original scripted programming won 22 awards: Eight wins for original comedy SCHITT’S CREEK including Best Comedy Series, Best Lead Actress, Comedy for Catherine O’Hara, Best Writing, Comedy for Dan Levy and Best Supporting Actress, Comedy for Emily Hampshire; four for KIM’S CONVENIENCE including a third win for Best Lead Actor, Comedy for Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and a fourth Best Supporting Actor, Comedy win for Andrew Phung; four awards for BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW including Best Performance, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble), Best Direction, Variety or Sketch Comedy and Best Writing, Variety or Sketch Comedy; three for TRICKSTER including Best Lead Actress, Drama for Crystle Lightning; and a Best Supporting Actress, Drama win for Tamara Podemski in CORONER.
- SCHITT’S CREEK’s Dan Levy also received special recognition with the Radius Award, presented by MADE | NOUS.
- Eighteen wins for CBC Films: Two awards for Tracey Deer’s BEANS including Best Motion Picture and Best First Feature Film; Jeff Barnaby’s BLOOD QUANTUM with seven awards, including Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Michael Greyeyes; followed by five wins for Charles Officer’s AKILLA’S ESCAPE including Achievement in Cinematography and Original Screenplay. FUNNY BOY won three awards including Adapted Screenplay and Achievement in Direction for Deepa Mehta. Mary Walsh won Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in HAPPY PLACE.
- Twelve awards for CBC and documentary Channel documentaries: three awards for acclaimed series ENSLAVED including Best History Documentary Program or Series; three wins for THE NATURE OF THINGS with host David Suzuki also receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award; two awards for TOXIC BEAUTY including Best Direction, Documentary Program; and a Best Short Documentary win for SING ME A LULLABY. CBC DOCS also received the Best Direction, Documentary Series award for its special presentation of BEING BLACK IN TORONTO.
- Five awards for CBC’s factual and arts programs, including one for the 2019 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE including Best Host, Live Entertainment Special for Jann Arden. CBC Arts won two awards, including for THE 2010S: THE DECADE CANADIAN ARTISTS STOPPED SAYING SORRY and CANADA’S A DRAG, which received the award for Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction, while STILL STANDING once again won Best Writing, Factual, for the fifth consecutive year.
- CBC Kids took home three awards, including two wins for DETENTION ADVENTURE for Best Writing, Children’s or Youth and Best Original Music, Fiction; and the award for Best Live Production, Social Media for CBC KIDS KINDIE GRAD CLASS OF 2020 FACEBOOK LIVE EVENT.
- Four awards for CBC Gem original comedies including two wins each for BIT PLAYAS including Best Writing, Web Program or Series and Best Web Program or Series, Fiction; and HEY LADY! with Jayne Eastwood winning Best Lead Performance, Web Program or Series.
