2014 Olympic Winter Games – Programming Highlights for Wednesday, February 19th

Wednesday is a big day for Ice Hockey with men’s quarter-finals kicking off, revealing the teams that will face-off against each other in the semifinals. Medal events to watch include the Women’s Speed Skating 5,000m Final, Biathlon Mixed Relay Final, Women’s Bobsleigh Final and Men’s Ski-Cross Final. The day will also showcase the Men’s Curling Semifinal and the Women’s Curling Bronze Medal match.

OLYMPIC MORNING:

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAM SPRINT CLASSIC (6:45 – 8 a.m. ET) on TSN2

Canadians Perianne Jones, Daria Gaiazova, Alex Harvey and Devon Kershaw will be competing in this event. Alex Harvey and Kershaw just missed the podium at the 2013 World Championship, so they will be looking to climb the podium.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: QUARTER-FINAL – FINLAND VS. RUSSIA (7:30 – 10 a.m. ET) on CBC

Finland qualified for the final automatic berth in the quarter-final and will take on the host Russians for the right to move on to the semifinal round.

SPEED SKATING: WOMEN’S 5000M FINAL (8:30 – 10:30 a.m. ET) on TSN2

Canadian Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa will be competing against the defending Vancouver 2010 Olympic gold medallist, Martina Sablikova of Czech Republic.

BIATHON: MIXED RELAY FINAL (9:30 – 11 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet One

Rosanna Crawford, Megan Heincke, Scott Perras and Jean-Phillippe Le Guellec will be competing for Canada in this event. Norway, France, Czech-Republic and Italy all have extremely strong contenders for a medal, and the Russians recently finished the World’s in sixth place.

CURLING: MEN’S SEMIFINAL – CANADA VS. CHINA (10 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET) on Sportsnet

Canadian Brad Jacobs (7-2) defeated China in round robin play for his sixth straight win. He’ll be looking to duplicate the result and move on to the gold medal match.

SemiFinal #2 – Sweden vs Great Britain – 10am – 1pm ET (online stream only)

Winner moves on to Gold medal match. Of these four teams, only Canada has been this far in the tournament (as compared to the others)

OLYMPIC DAYTIME:

FIGURE SKATING: WOMEN’S SHORT PROGRAM (10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. ET) on TSN

*CBC will air portions of this event at 3 p.m. ET

Canadian favourite Kaetlyn Osmond (2014 Canadian national champion) of Marystown, Newfoundland will be participating in this event alongside 16-year-old teammate Gabrielle Daleman. They will be up against Yuna Kim of South Korea who is the defending Olympic Ladies champion. After taking three years off, Kim successfully won the World Title recently in London, Ontario.

BOBSLEIGH: WOMEN’S FINAL (11 – 1:20 p.m. ET) on Sportsnet One

Kaillie Humphries, Canada 1 pilot, with Heather Moyse, look to defend their Olympic Gold Medal.  Jenny Chiochetti will pilot Canada 2. Humphries will be looking to defend her title against Elena Meyers who will pilot the USA 1 ride while the Germans will counter with Sandra Kiriasis. Kiriasis has 45 career victories has dominated women’s bobsleigh from 2003-2011.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: QUARTER-FINAL – CANADA VS. SWITZERLAND/LATVIA (12– 2:30 p.m. ET) on CBC

Team Canada will play the winner of the Switzerland vs. Latvia qualification game with a berth in the semifinal round hanging in the balance.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: QUARTER-FINAL – USA VS. CZECH REPUBLIC/SLOVAKIA (12 – 2:30 p.m. ET) on TSN2

The second-ranked Americans will face the winner of the qualification match between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The winner will move on to the semifinal to meet the winner of Canada’s quarter-final match-up.

OLYMPIC PRIMETIME:

Olympic Primetime hosted by Ron MacLean, CBC-TV and cbc.ca/olympics will be bringing Canadians context from the twelfth day of Olympic Competition from Sochi. Check local listings for start times. OLYMPIC OVERNIGHT (THURSDAY, FEB. 20):

FREESTYLE SKIING: MEN’S SKI CROSS QUALIFICATION & Round of 16 (2:45 – 6 a.m. ET) on CBC

Canadians Christopher del Bosco, Brady Leman and David Duncan will be competing in this event, against the most recent World champion, Jean-Frédéric Chapuis of France. Del Bosco has landed on the World Cup Podium 20 times since 2009, and came just short of a medal in Vancouver 2010. David Duncan began the season with back-to-back victories in Innichen/San Candido, Italy.

NORDIC COMBINED: MEN’S TEAM LARGE HILL (3 – 3:50 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

CURLING: WOMEN’S BRONZE MEDAL MATCH (3:30 – 6:30 a.m. ET) on TSN

Canada/Great Britain vs. Sweden/Switzerland

FREESTYLE SKIING: MEN’S SKI CROSS SEMIFINAL & FINAL (4:30 – 6 a.m. ET) on CBC

Canada’s Christopher del Bosco hopes to be in the hunt for a medal following the qualification round.

NORDIC COMBINED: MEN’S TEAM 4x5KM (5:45 – 7:15 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet

*CBC will join this event in progress at 6 a.m.

The Germans, led by Eric Frenzel are the Overall World Cup champions, who will have some stiff competition from France and Japan.
