The official trailer for Crave’s newest Original Series, the new true crime send-up NEW EDEN, was released today. Hailing from the brilliant comedic minds of its creators, showrunners, and stars Kayla Lorette (KIM’S CONVENIENCE, SPACE RIDERS) and Evany Rosen (PICNICFACE, BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW), the eight-part, half-hour series drops on Crave on New Year’s Day.
Spanning the 70s, 80s, and 90s, NEW EDEN is a hilariously complex, true crime parody that begins in 1977 near Halworth B.C. when Katherine Wryfield (Lorette) and Grace Lee (Rosen) attempt to start a large-scale feminist utopia, “New Eden.” While intentions for this would-be utopia are noble, in the inexperienced hands of Lee and Wryfield, the community quickly devolves into drug addled, alien-goddess worshipping chaos…and murder. Definitely some murder.
The Cast
In addition to Rosen and Lorette, the series stars Leah Doz as former New Eden member “Max Solomin”; Caitlin Howden as former New Eden member “Dr. Sharon Birnbaum”; Ronnie Rowe Jr. as “Wyatt Hudley”, a former editor in chief of the Vancouver Post; Tony Nappo as “Hank Neston,” a former BC provincial police staff sergeant; Melody Johnson as “Elizabeth Mill,” Katherine and Grace’s former attorney; and Ted Atherton as BC crown prosecutor “Josiah Noseworthy.”
The Deep Dive
In 1981, New Eden was raided after Grace and Katherine rushed an underage girl to the hospital with a drug overdose. In addition to the wild narcotic substances found on the property, all mixed by Grace, the cops also found something even more disturbing: human remains. Grace and Katherine were arrested, and charged, and their trial would become a media sensation almost as quickly as it would be forgotten upon their conviction. And that’s where our story begins, in 1991, four months before Grace and Katherine are set to be released after serving eight years in federal prison.
By now, Grace and Katherine have gone from being a true crime sensation, to a national joke, to largely forgotten altogether. That’s when two young male documentarians catch wind of the story and convince Katherine and Grace to give their first on camera interview in almost a decade. And with that, Broadcast National Television’s “historic” documentary series, “New Eden: Women Who Sin”, was born.
