CBC Sports To Provide Exclusive Coverage Of The 2022 Canad Inns Mixed Doubles Curling Trials, Dec. 28–Jan. 2

With the OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES BEIJING 2022 fast approaching, CBC Sports is bringing audiences across the country exclusive coverage of the 2022 CANAD INNS MIXED DOUBLES CURLING TRIALS. Streaming live from Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, MB from December 28 through January 2, the Olympic Games qualifying tournament will be available via CBC Sports digital platforms: cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices and the free CBC Gem streaming service. Live coverage of the MIXED DOUBLES TRIALS will be led by CBC Sports’ Bruce Rainnie who will deliver the call alongside Olympic Games silver medallist Mike Harris and Olympian and World Champion Joanne Courtney, providing analysis.

Sixteen teams featuring top male and female Canadian curlers from across the country will compete in the MIXED DOUBLES TRIALS for the chance to qualify for Beijing 2022 and defend Canada’s gold medal earned at PyeongChang 2018 by Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris.

The 16 teams competing in the Trials are as follows:

  • Kadriana Sahaidak (Gimli, Man.)/Colton Lott (Gimli, Man.)
  • Lisa Weagle (Ottawa)/John Epping (Toronto)
  • Laurie St-Georges (Laval, Que.)/Félix Asselin (Laval, Que.)
  • Chelsea Carey (Calgary)/Colin Hodgson (Red Lake, Ont.)
  • Shannon Birchard (Winnipeg)/Catlin Schneider (Regina)
  • Val Sweeting (Lottie Lake, Alta.)/Marc Kennedy (St. Albert, Alta.)
  • Clancy Grandy (Pickering, Ont.)/Patrick Janssen (Pickering, Ont.)
  • Laura Walker (Edmonton)/Kirk Muyres (Regina)
  • Kim Tuck (Strathroy, Ont.)/Wayne Tuck (Strathroy, Ont.)
  • Émilie Desjardins (Chicoutimi, Que.)/Robert Desjardins (Chicoutimi, Que.)
  • Bobbie Sauder (Spruce Grove, Alta.)/Brendan Bottcher (Spruce Grove, Alta.)
  • Lauren Wasylkiw (Stouffville, Ont.)/Shane Konings (Stouffville, Ont.)

Teams will be separated into two pools of eight and will play a seven-game round-robin. The top team in each pool following the round-robin will receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs, while the four teams with the next best records, regardless of which pool they were in, will also qualify for the playoffs.

Round-robin games will begin Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT and will conclude Friday, Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT). The Playoffs will begin Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT  and will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 2 with the semifinal at 10:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. PT, followed by the final at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT.

In addition to the live streaming coverage of the MIXED DOUBLES TRIALS, fans can get their curling fix with new episodes of CBC Sports’ digital series That Curling Show, hosted by two-time world champion curler Colleen Jones and CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux. That Curling Show is the local rink where curlers and fans alike come together – except virtual. Throughout the tournament Colleen and Devin will chat with top curlers, get to know some of Canada’s biggest curling fans and break down the complicated road to Beijing. They’ll have the stories, highlights and even a little friendly banter, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Subsequent MIXED DOUBLES TRIALS episodes of That Curling Show are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, Saturday, Jan. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT and Sunday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

CBC’s coverage of mixed doubles curling will continue on February 2, as the network’s first live broadcast of Beijing 2022.
