You hail a taxi on a busy street, your mind already focused on your destination. But once inside the cab, you soon discover you’re in for the ride of your life – you’ve just buckled into CASH CAB – and the meter is already running! Cruising the streets of Toronto – from Dundas to the Danforth – the Canadian production of CASH CAB is back for a new season with host Adam Growe. Season 3 of CASH CAB returns Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT beginning Sept. 11 on Discovery Channel with 13 new episodes (with another 13 original episodes slated to begin in January). On CASH CAB, unassuming people enter the car as simple passengers needing a taxi ride, only to discover that they’re instant contestants on Discovery Channel’s entertaining and informative game show.
The Cash Cab will drive you all the way to your destination and, en route, Growe asks general knowledge questions and each correct answer earns a cash prize. But beware of incorrect answers! A wrong answer earns a strike – and three strikes and you’re out! The moment the contestant misses their third question, the Cash Cab pulls over to the side of the road and the unlucky passenger is ejected onto the sidewalk – no matter how far away they are from their intended destination!
Sounds like an easy way to earn a few bucks getting from Point A to Point B? OK, armchair trivia champions, test your knowledge to see if you’ve got what it takes! Questions from Season 3 rides include (answers below):
1. In East Africa, the original boda-boda is what type of taxi?
2. What is the structural component of a green plant’s cell wall that is very hard for humans to digest, but is an important food source for herbivores like cows, horses and also termites?
3. Similar to seals and crows, penguins tend to congregate, breed and care for their offspring in large colonies called what?
4. Does treating an object with tomato juice remove the smell of a skunk?
5. Prevalent in urban design and development projects and a term familiar to concerned citizens’ groups, what does the acronym NIMBY stand for?
How did you do? Add downtown traffic, game show lights and sounds, plus a bit of adrenaline and it’s not an easy task. Host – and licenced taxi driver – Adam Growe notes that the element of surprise works both ways, since he never knows who’s going to get into the cab next.
“I was joking with a team that, in order to avoid a strike, they had to answer a question in Latin,” said Growe. “I wouldn’t have really given them a strike. But, it didn’t matter. Not only were they able to do it, but they proceeded to provide answers in Latin to several other questions.”
And although Growe is also an actor and comedian, he’s not the only one who can deliver the punch lines. “There was one group of guys that cracked me up so much that I couldn’t drive the Cab any longer and had to pull over. It was a combination of them being funny chaps and then I got a case of the giggles.”
