| CBC News to air more stories from Alberta |

CBC News today announced it will dramatically increase resources devoted to covering local and national news in Alberta generally and Calgary and Edmonton in particular.
Moving to fulfill a commitment to local newsgathering announced nationally last year, CBC News will be doubling the number of newsgathering resources in Alberta by adding approximately 25 new assignments for television journalists based in Calgary and Edmonton to focus on local and national stories originating in Alberta.
“There are important stories that need to be told throughout Canada,” says John Cruickshank, publisher of CBC News. “Calgary and Edmonton are now among the most dynamic cities in the country. We want our news coverage to reflect that reality. As we said last year, our plan is to put more ‘feet on the street’ to maximize our television news gathering and production resources locally in these important areas.”
“This decision allows us to strengthen our ongoing commitment to deliver unique coverage that represents an Alberta perspective on local, national and international news,” says Don Orchard, regional director for Calgary.
“With the addition of these extra newsgathering resources, we significantly increase our ability to bring to our audiences the stories they want and need to know,” says Mike Linder, regional director for Edmonton.
More information about specific assignments can be expected in coming months, Orchard and Linder said.
CBC News also announced today plans to reconfigure to Toronto the two hours of programming for the all-news channel CBC Newsworld, which are currently being produced from Calgary.
CBC Newsworld will continue to offer a uniquely Canadian perspective on national and international events and with the increased newsgathering resources in Calgary and Edmonton, it will now be able to feature even better coverage of Alberta, Cruickshank said.
CBC/Radio-Canada brings diverse regional and cultural perspectives into the daily lives of Canadians in English, French and eight aboriginal languages, in nine languages on its international Radio service, RCI, and in eight languages on its web-based radio service RCI viva.
