This fall, CMT Canada explores what it takes to make a star, as it shines the spotlight on six musical diamonds in the rough and gives them the chance to impress the best and brightest executives in the music industry.
Plucked, a CMT Original Production documenting how stars-in-training cope when they’re suddenly catapulted into the limelight premieres Monday, October 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on-air and online at www.cmtcanada.com/plucked.
Taking six independent country artists who have each achieved regional and opening act-level success, this six-part documentary/competition series strives to take them to headliner status by giving them all the tools they need to “make it.” Each episode profiles one act, following their daily lives: their day jobs, their hopes, families and friends, and their unpolished songs. Then it’s off to music industry boot camp in Toronto, where, with the assistance of music industry experts Ron Kitchener (RGK Entertainment Group Inc.), Alan Frew (Glass Tiger) and Bonnie Fedrau (So Star Struck!), they’re in for a rapid transformation: management consultation, a style makeover and the production of their own music videos. At boot camp, dreams, a remarkable opportunity, and the reality of a tough industry all collide.
An element of competition is introduced as CMT viewers ultimately decide the act with the most star potential through text message voting in a two-hour live in-studio special on November 13 at 9 p.m. ET. The studio audience, artists and industry executives converge in the CMT studios where the lucky and talented winner is awarded $35,000 towards the making of their next music video.
“We are pleased to continue CMT’s tradition of spotlighting undiscovered artists with Plucked,” said Ted Ellis, Director of Programming, CMT. “This innovative series allows us to nurture the careers of several Canadian artists, while providing viewers with an engaging and interactive experience.”
Plucked contenders are:
Carla Sacco: This former Elite model has experience as a magazine covergirl, spokesmodel, host and actress, but is most known for her role as “Shania’s Twin,” a cleverly gimmicked platform used to gain extensive experience and credibility. Fronting a five-piece band for crowds of up to 50,000 and syndicated to millions she has given over 1,000 concerts, all as her alter-ego.
Pear: Denis and Lynae Dufresne make up the sweet yet gritty duo Pear. They have performed all over the world including Europe, Scandinavia, France, Germany, China and throughout North America.
Aaron Goodvin: Since graduating from high school in 2003, 20-year-old Aaron has kicked his music career into high gear. He reveals his versatility through his performance of traditional country, new country and old rock music, but his songwriting expertise is where he really shines.
Ambush: The high-energy country rock band born in 1993 has been dubbed "the little band with the big sound.” Mark McDonell, Riq Turner and Jim Wright’s unprecedented combination of talent, experience and contagious enthusiasm contributes to their growing popularity.
Mike Gouchie: Mike's reputation as a go-getter and hard working artist is leaving an impressive mark with people in the music business and is earning him many new friends in the industry. His fresh new sound is being played on airwaves around the world from Tokyo to Arizona, back to Canada and beyond.
Lisa Hewitt: Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Lisa now calls Edmonton home. Her radiant smile and obvious good looks are magnified by a delivery that is sometimes sassy and seductive. Although, recognized as an “upcoming star,” Lisa shines with veteran confidence easily blending in with country’s biggest stars.
From the team behind the critically acclaimed CMT series The Wilkinsons, Plucked is produced by Henry Less Productions, in association with CMT, and airs Mondays at 10 p.m., (r) Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m. beginning October 2. Each act’s music video produced at boot camp will be archived and available online at cmtcananda.com.
