Bravo! debuts a television series that profiles contemporary Canadian poets and reveals their muse
Posted on Wednesday, March 08, 2006 - 05:15 PM
Bravo!

Poetry has always had an aura of passion and romance; lonely writers sitting in a garret, pouring out their hearts and souls. But the truth is working Canadian poets come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, have different jobs, experiences, attitudes and influences, and write about everything from love to politics to their daily lives. This is what is revealed in Heart of a Poet, a documentary television series in "13 verses" that airs on Bravo! every Thursday at 8pm ET, beginning April 13th.

Produced and directed by Maureen Judge and Tina Hahn in association with Bravo!, and hosted by writer/editor Angela Rawlings, Heart of a Poet is a hip half-hour show that takes viewers inside the poetry community, in all its various forms, alternate incarnations and unfettered diversity. Each week the series throws a spotlight on an individual poet and profiles their life, inspiration and performances. From established award winners including Christian Bok, Marty Gervais and bill bissett, to rising literary stars like Sherwin Tjia, Andrea Thompson and Sandra Alland, Heart of a Poet introduces the featured artists and their writing through interviews, spontaneous recitations in and around their communities, readings at the renowned Art Bar Reading Series in Toronto, and the many experiences, both large and small, that fill their days and help shape their poems.

The series begins on Bravo! with Griffin Prize winner and University of Calgary English Professor, Christian Bok, who offers an exciting performance of beat box and groundbreaking experimental sound poetry (April 13). In the second episode, Andrea Thompson, after finding her voice in Vancouver, takes her poetry to the streets of Toronto in dynamic spoken word performances that combine spirituality and sensuality (April 20). The series continues with Stuart Ross (April 27), Jill Hartman (May 4), Rudy Fearon (May 11), Marty Gervais (May 18) and Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm (May 25).

Executive producer/director Maureen Judge is best known for her Genie award-winning documentary Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship, and the popular award-winning films In My Parents' Basement and And We Knew How To Dance. Judge recently created and produced the 13-episode documentary series Family Secrets. Producer/director Tina Hahn is the producer and editor of the documentary Life's a Twitch, which was nominated for two Gemini awards.

Heart of a Poet is created and produced by Makin' Movies Inc. and Symmetree media in association with Access Media Group's BookTelevision, ACCESS and CLT; and Bravo! Canada, a division of CHUM Limited.
