In the network’s first foray into awards show programming, TV Land announces the premier of the TV Land Awards: A Celebration of Classic TV on March 12th, 2003. With host – Emmy-award winning actor John Ritter, the awards will be simulcast in Canada and the U.S at 9:00pm ET/PT.
The special recognizes the shows from television’s rich history that have truly withstood the test of time. TV Land, together with some of the most beloved celebrities of modern and classic TV, will honour the legends, innovators, and pop culture favourites of television’s past. The recipient shows include The Dick Van Dyke Show (Legend Award), All in the Family (Innovator Award), Star Trek (Pop Culture Award), and Julia (Groundbreaking Role Award).
The ceremony will also present the Viewer’s Choice Awards, the accumulation of over a year of viewer voting on the TV Land website on awards ranging from “Catchiest TV Catch Phrase” and “Comedy Theme Song You Just Can’t Get Out Of Your Head” to “Best Second Banana”. To date, hundreds of thousands of votes have been registered on tvland.com.
Building up to the main event, Kathy Najimy will host the Red Carpet Countdown to the TV Land Awards starting at 8:30pm ET/PT on March 12th. Star of “Sister Act”, King of the Hill, and Veronica’s Closet, Kathy will report from the famed Red Carpet, welcoming some of the most beloved celebrities of both modern and classic television. Scheduled to appear are Sally Struthers, Davy Jones, Dick Van Dyke, Halle Berry, Dick Clark, Ted Danson, and Bea Arthur. Kelly will be joined by Keshia Knight-Pulliam, star of The Cosby Show, who will be taking a behind-the-scenes tour of The Hollywood Palladium and its rich history.
