Sportsnet’s MasterCard Memorial Cup Audiences Increase by 28%

Sportsnet’s wall-to-wall coverage of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup, which wrapped up last night with a riveting Championship Final decided in overtime, was one of the most-watched Memorial Cup tournaments in network history, featuring an average of 575,000 (2+) viewers tuning in to Sunday’s final and an average audience of 306,000 (2+) tuning into the full nine-game tournament broadcast on Sportsnet East, Ontario, West and Pacific.

The 575,000* average audience for the Championship Final marks a 7 per cent increase over the 2011 final, and is the second highest Memorial Cup Championship Final average audience in Sportsnet history. Audience levels peaked at 966,000* viewers at 11:01 p.m. ET during overtime.  The largest Memorial Cup Championship Final audience was recorded in 2005 (806,000 viewers, 2+) during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout and featured Sidney Crosby’s Rimouski Oceanic.

Sportsnet’s coverage of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup Round Robin (six games) attracted an average audience of 265,000* viewers, marking a 32 per cent increase over the 2011 Round Robin average audience of 201,000*. This was also the second-highest Memorial Cup Round Robin average audience in network history, with the 2005 Memorial Cup recording the most-watched Round Robin with an average of 531,000 viewers (2+).
