CBC/Radio-Canada and its creative and production partners have received 320 nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards, reflecting the public broadcaster’s commitment to Canadian content, creators and communities. The awards will be presented during Canadian Screen Week, April 11 through 14, 2023, culminating on April 16 with the THE CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS WITH SAMANTHA BEE, an hour-long broadcast special featuring celebrity interviews, highlights from the Awards presentations throughout the week, and exclusive access to this year’s Special Award recipients. The broadcast special will air on Sunday, April 16 at 8 p.m. (9 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.

Highlights of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Canadian Screen Award nominations include the following:
- CBC NEWS received 22 nominations in 15 categories including six nominations for THE NATIONAL, the most nominations for any news program, and nods for THE FIFTH ESTATE (2) and MARKETPLACE (1). CBC NEWS NETWORK received three nominations, and CBC regional news programs received seven nominations in three categories for excellence, in Vancouver (3), Prince Edward Island (1), Saskatchewan (1), Toronto (1) and Winnipeg (1). CBC News original for CBC Gem, BEING BLACK IN CANADA: MY JOURNEY HERE, received a nomination, as did CBC News live special POPE FRANCIS IN CANADA: MASKWACIS APOLOGY, and CBC News Studios’ special ESI EDUGYAN: OUT OF THE SUN, THE CBC MASSEY LECTURES.
- CBC SPORTS received eight nominations for its coverage of the 2022 BEIJING WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES, including for Best Sports Program or Series, Best Sports Host, Best Sports Analyst, Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer, and Best Live Production, Social Media for THE EXTRA HOUR. A collaboration with CBC NEWS, BEING BLACK IN CANADA AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES, was recognized in the category of Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction.
- CBC’s original scripted programming earned 139 nominations, including Best Drama Series nominations for MOONSHINE, THE PORTER and SKYMED; Best Comedy Series nods for SORT OF and FAKES; and Best Sketch Comedy Series nominations for TALLBOYZ and THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES. Five CBC titles have swept the Best Direction, Drama Series category.
- Drama: THE PORTER (19) including one nod for Best Direction and two for Best Writing as well as three nominations for Best Lead Performer for Aml Ameen, Ronnie Rowe Jr. and Mouna Traoré; CORONER (8) including Best Direction and Best Writing; MOONSHINE (6) including Best Lead Performer for Jennifer Finnigan; MURDOCH MYSTERIES (6); DIGGSTOWN (4); HEARTLAND (1); and SKYMED (1).
- Comedy: SORT OF (15) including two nods each for Best Writing and Best Direction, as well as one nomination each for Best Lead Performer for Bilal Baig and Best Supporting Performer for Amanda Cordner; PRETTY HARD CASES (11) including two nominations for Best Lead Performer for Meredith MacNeill and Adrienne C. - CBC GEM original scripted series are led by REVENGE OF THE BLACK BEST FRIEND (9) with nominations including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction and a nomination for Best Direction, three for Best Writing, and two for Best Lead Performance for Oluniké Adeliyi and Araya Mengesha. TOPLINE has received three nominations including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction; FAKES (2) is nominated for Best Comedy Series, while LIDO TV (2) is recognized for Best Direction and Best Lead Performance. REAL BLACKITY TALK has received one nomination.
- CBC KIDS has garnered 23 nominations, led by CBC Gem original DETENTION ADVENTURE (15) with nominations including Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program or Series, and five nods in the category of Best Performance, Children’s or Youth for the lead cast. BIG BLUE (2) is recognized in the category of Best Animated Program or Series and MALORY TOWERS (2) in the category of Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program or Series, with two nods for UKULELE U and a single nomination each for DINO RANCH (1) and Studio K’s PROUD TO BE ME – ANTI-RACISM SPECIAL (1).
- CBC’s original unscripted, arts and documentary programming has received 80 nominations including:

- Documentaries: CBC and documentary Channel titles received a total of 36 nominations including seven nods for THE NATURE OF THINGS, four nominations for UNLOVED: HURONIA’S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN, and three each for DEAR JACKIE and special presentation ARCTIC BLUE. THE CASE AGAINST COSBY, CRYSTAL PITE: ANGELS’ ATLAS, doc series EVIL BY DESIGN: SURVIVING NYGARD, THE PRETENDIANS and SCRAP each received two nominations. CBC Halifax’s BEING BLACK IN HALIFAX; THE COLOUR OF INK; DOUG AND THE SLUGS AND ME; GEOGRAPHIES OF SOLITUDE; doc series SUMMIT 72; and THE TALENTED MR. ROSENBERG each received one.
