It’s out of this world! Discovery HD presents the First LIVE High Definition Broadcast from Space, Wed., Nov. 15 at 11:30 a.m. ET. This 30-minute commercial-free HD broadcast – including approximately 20 minutes live from the International Space Station – will allow Discovery HD subscribers the clearest look yet at the Earth.
In cooperation with NASA, Discovery Communications Inc. (DCI) and Japanese broadcaster NHK, this special presentation is the first ever live HD broadcast from space.
NASA Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, assisted by crewmates Thomas Reiter of the European Space Agency and Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, will address viewers during the downlink, sharing a meal while discussing the importance of diet and nutrition on long duration spaceflight. As part of the Expedition 14 crew, they arrived at the International Space Station on September 20 on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
When the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched in September, it carried some unique cargo – a Sony HD 750A camera and special new HD transmission hardware to be delivered to the International Space Station. The camera has now been installed and prepared for its first live transmission, promising to give viewers vivid crystal clear images of the astronauts and their daily routines plus stunning HD views of the Earth below.
Discovery HD will present an encore broadcast of the special at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
