Kevin Newman Joins Bell Media as Co-Host of CTV’s Question Period and Digital News Evangelist for Bell Media

Wendy Freeman, President, CTV News, announced today that Kevin Newman joins the CTV News Team as the Co-Host of CTV’s QUESTION PERIOD and as the Digital News Evangelist for Bell Media, beginning August 22.

In his new role as Co-Host of QUESTION PERIOD, Newman joins long-time Co-Host Craig Oliver, Chief Political Correspondent for CTV News at the helm of Canada’s national political landmark for the program’s 41st season in September. QUESTION PERIOD is known for consistently delivering coverage of the news and newsmakers from Ottawa, across the country and around the world.

“QUESTION PERIOD is a must-see program for people interested in Canadian politics and I’m delighted that Kevin is joining the team,” said Freeman. ”His experience and expert interview skills are going to help QUESTION PERIOD continue its tenure as a political powerhouse.”

“Kevin is one of the best political journalists in the country,” said Oliver. “I hired Kevin in the 80s when I was CTV’s Ottawa Bureau Chief and I couldn’t be happier to have him back.”

In his dual role as the newly appointed Digital News Evangelist for Bell Media, Newman will also help shape the digital future of CTV News and will work with the Bell Media team to build the digital brand for CTV News as well as offer insight into the digital media strategy for other Bell Media properties.

“Kevin is a social media enthusiast, his combined knowledge of both the news world and the digital world make him a perfect candidate for this new role,” said Gary Anderson, Head of Bell Media Digital. “I’m looking forward to Kevin’s input as we continue to do even more to reach audiences across all platforms for both CTV News and other Bell Media properties.”

With more than 30 years experience, Newman is known as one of Canada’s top national news experts. He was the national news anchor at Global Television for 10 years before stepping down in August 2010 to begin exploring the emerging digital content field. In the months since he has aligned himself with some of the most innovative and creative partners in Canada, and has earned the respect of some of Canada’s technology pioneers including OpenText Executive Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer Tom Jenkins who told the RTNDA journalism conference in May 2011 that Kevin: “is the traditional journalist in Canada learning the most and doing more to build the next generation of journalism than anyone.”

In 2001 Newman returned to Global Television after seven years as an anchor and correspondent at ABC News in New York. During that time he hosted and reported for NIGHTLINE, WORLD NEWS TONIGHT and GOOD MORNING AMERICA. Prior to working in the United States, Newman worked at all three Canadian national news networks as a parliamentary reporter and also spent time as the co-anchor of CBC Midday, an afternoon news and interview program. Newman has two Emmys and a Peabody for his work as well as two Gemini Awards and a RTNDA’s Edward R. Murrow Award for election coverage in 2008.
