Celluloid Dreams (IFC Original) – Fall 2002
A celebration of surreal cinema, this documentary answers the question: how do filmmakers use sci-fi, fantasy and just plain weirdness to critique and celebrate modern life? Directed by James Dunnison, the one-hour doc features interviews with and clips from films by Guy Maddin (The Heart of the World), the Brothers Quay (In Absentia), Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and a rare and insightful discussion with David Lynch (Mulholland Drive). Pushing the limits and capturing the unreal and the dream-like on film, these pioneers test the conventions of classic Hollywood narratives. Paperny Films’ (Kink) documentary sets the scene for a festival of fevered, fantasy-fuelled films on IFC.
