Janette Oke’s books about the Canadian West inspired this series about Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher with a high-society background who experiences a culture shock when she is assigned to teach in the small mining town of Coal Valley. Her arrival follows a recent explosion that killed more than a dozen of the town’s miners, leaving their widows to work the mines to earn a living.
Humans – 9pm on AMC – Series premiere
This parallel universe sci-fi drama (based on an award-winning Swedish series called Real Humans) is set in a world where lifelike humanoids called Synths are the latest must-have gadgets in any household, but living with them is an adjustment for many. William Hurt stars along with Katherine Parkinson, Colin Morgan, Rebecca Front and Gemma Chan. (Also airs Wednesday at 1am, Thursday at 11am, Friday at 3am and next Sunday at 1am and 10am.)
Last Tango In Halifax – 8pm on PBS – 3rd Season Premiere
This romantic comedy follows two 70-somethings who find each other (after a history together in their youth) when their grandsons put their profiles on a social-networking site. Their rekindled romance is complicated by their daughters, who can’t s stand each other.
Teen Wolf – 10pm on MTV – 5th Season Premiere (an additional episode on Tuesday at 9pm on MTV)
Scott and his pack are faced with a new foe on the eve of the start of their senior year.
Zoo – 9pm on CBS and CTV
James Wolk stars in this thriller based on James Patterson’s best-selling novel about a world where animals start exhibiting strange behaviour, leading to attacks on humans around the world. Wold plays Jackson Oz, the renegade zoologist who has to solve the mystery behind the seemingly coordinated attacks before humans run out of a safe place to hide.
Extant – 10pm on CBS and Global – 2nd Season Premiere
This Halle Berry sci-fi series picks up six months after the first season finale, with Molly in a psychiatric hospital when she starts to learn of the bizarre deaths of people that are strikingly similar to the ones she witnessed while she was in space. (I wonder if they will explain the mystery of why her android son seemed to grow like a week during the break.)
