Following an Eastern Conference Final victory against the New York Red Bulls, Atlanta United will compete in the MLS CUP championship for the first time in franchise history. Founded only two years ago, the young team secured their spot by building a 3-0 lead in Leg #1. In Leg #2, Atlanta’s strong defence left their opponents with little chance at a comeback, ultimately finishing the series with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
The Portland Timbers edged Sporting KC in the Western Conference Final, returning to the MLS Cup for the second time in four years. After a scoreless draw in Leg #1, the Timbers came back from an early deficit in the second leg, with a final aggregate score of 3-2. Portland secured their first and only MLS CUP in 2015.
