TSN steps between the ropes for a special edition of World Championship Boxing on Saturday, March 8 at 12 midnight ET (encore on Sunday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. ET) for the March 1 WBA Heavyweight Championship title fight between heavyweight newcomer Roy Jones Jr. and John Ruiz. This match will be followed by another hard-hitting heavyweight bout featuring the #2 ranked heir apparent to the heavyweight title, Wladimir Klitschko taking on top South African contender Corrie Sanders.
TSN’s broadcast of the Jones Jr. vs. Ruiz fight marks the first time the 12-round heavyweight match will be broadcast on a non pay-per-view basis in Canada.
The much-anticipated Jones vs. Ruiz bout featured Jones’ inaugural appearance in the heavyweight division and marked the final step of his incredible climb up boxing’s weight division ladder. Leading up to the fight, Jones held the light heavyweight title and was also a former champion in both the middleweight and super middleweight ranks.
The Klitschko vs. Sanders bout marks Klitschko’s 41st match in the heavyweight division. Klitschko, who continues to bide his time in hopes of a title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, has suffered only one loss in his entire professional boxing career.
