HUNT FOR A SUPER COMET is the story of Comet ISON – a sungrazer with a potentially deadly fate and on a trajectory to slingshot around the Sun. Premiering Wednesday, December 4 at 7 p.m. ET on Discovery and hosted by DAILY PLANET’s Dr. Dan Riskin – the one-hour special presentation features Discovery cameras travelling around the globe tracking the latest information about this icy rock’s journey into the inner solar system.Featuring expert analysis from leading scientists, astronomers, and amateur stargazers, HUNT FOR A SUPER COMET charts how Comet ISON could be the brightest comet to be observed from Earth – ever – when it approaches the Sun later this month.
HUNT FOR A SUPER COMET is an inside look at ISON’s arrival – sure to be one of the most observed comets in history. Scientists, tingling with excitement, are not positive on how Comet ISON will develop – but like the Great Comet of 1680 – it is expected to be brightest when very near the Sun, in ISON’s case, during the last few days of November and into December. During the hour, leading planetary scientists including Don Yeomans, Amy Mainzer, Richard Zurek, and Carey Lisse introduce ISON – a cometary wild card – as Discovery follows the ISON hunt via sounding rockets, planetary balloons, and 747s in the sky!
HUNT FOR A SUPER COMET is produced by Exploration Production Inc. (EPI) in association with Discovery Canada. Kelly McKeown is the Executive Producer and Producer is Shelley Ayres.
