Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks! Wins Best TV Show at the 12th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards

Channel Zero is pleased to celebrate the win of CHCH TV’s locally-produced television show Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks, in partnership with Kerzner/Mediarts, at last night’s Canadian Comedy Awards.

And the winner is …
Up against Call Me Fitz, Fancy, Less Than Kind, and Living In Your Car for Best TV Show – Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks! took home the award in this newly-created category that is selected by a jury of industry personnel and voted on by Canadian viewers.

“We’re excited about this win not only because it’s the first time that Canadian television shows have been singled out in a category of their own, but because this win reaffirms my belief that it doesn’t matter what the budget is; if you can capture the hearts and minds of your intended audience, you will succeed! And last night’s win proved it!” stated one happy Romen Podzyhun, Executive Producer and Chairman, Channel Zero Inc.

About The Show
Mystery Science Theatre meets Monty Python. Ed and Liana K, the puppet’s companion from his long-running Ed’s Night Party, plus a few oddball friends, watched really bad movies, trying to make sense of why these B and C class movies were worthy of cult status.

Comprised of 13 two-hour episodes, Ed the Sock’s This Movie Sucks! aired on CHCH from the Summer of 2010 to the Spring of 2011. It drew national appeal and was syndicated on CHEK Victoria and Métro14 Montréal.

Cast: Ed the Sock, Liana K, Ron Sparks; Executive Producers: Romen Podzyhun, Steven Kerzner, Liana Kerzner; Producer: Ron Sparks; Writers: Steven Kerzner, Liana Kerzner, Ron Sparks, Andrew Young; Editor/Post-Production: Steven Kerzner; Production Supervisor: Wayne Rabishaw.

About the Production
The first co-operative venture between CHCH and Kerzner/Mediarts, it was a unique arrangement whereby CHCH brought the production elements to the table: facilities, equipment, manpower, and most importantly, the airtime; and Kerzner/Mediarts were host to everything creative: the cast, the writing, the performance, and were lead in producing and editing of the show. “What makes this show so distinctive is that the budget for all 13 shows was on par with the craft services budget you’d expect on a big network production. This proves that locally-produced programming can still beat network fare with good content and creativity. You can have a big budget or ingenuity, but you’d be hard pressed to have both,” said Steven Kerzner, Creator and Executive Producer of Ed the Sock.

About the Brand
Ed the Sock is a national icon, a Canadian TV star beloved coast to coast for his fearless wit and stinging satire. Whether hobnobbing with celebrities or hanging with the common folk, Ed has a unique ability to create laughs while making sharp points about show business, pop culture or politics.

This coming January, Ed The Sock will celebrate 25 years on television and will claim fame to the longest running weekly comedy show in Canadian television history.

Coming Up Next …
Ed the Sock’s I Hate Hollywood is coming to CHCH in January 2012. A comedy documentary skewering of Hollywood myth and spin. Keep your eyes and ears open for more information.
