In an effort to redefine how news and information is consumed across the country, Global News is pleased to announce today the reinvented GlobalNews.ca. Featuring a new editorial strategy and an innovative design that supports the growth of mobile devices as a viewing platform, GlobalNews.ca has put the pieces in place to give Canadians the chance to experience a whole new level of reporting through an online outlet that is completely ahead of the curve.
“The new GlobalNews.ca represents Shaw’s continued investment in connecting Canadians with the most relevant and timely news and information,” says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice President, News & Station Operations. “The focus on giving viewers the best possible experience, regardless of whether they are watching TV or browsing on their smartphone, is the reason Global News continues to be Canada’s fastest-growing major news organization.”
The new GlobalNews.ca has been completely reinvented to maximize the user experience and make it as easy and intuitive as possible. Central to this philosophy is its use of responsive design technology, which will automatically scale GlobalNews.ca content to fit any screen size or resolution, creating a seamless experience on all browsers and platforms; be it PC, tablet or smartphone. Using this technology, video shot by Global News – including live streaming video – is also easily available on GlobalNews.ca regardless of viewing device. Responsive design will give users access to more Global News content than any general news app could provide.
GlobalNews.ca has also introduced a completely redesigned backend based on the popular WordPress VIP open-source content management system. Powering roughly 18% of all internet sites, the open-source nature of this system means Global News will have the capacity to continually update, augment and improve the site to meet the changing needs of users as well as the rapidly-evolving social media landscape. The new WordPress VIP system was designed, from the start, to give Global News’ entire team of broadcast journalists the ability to publish content to the web.
The new-found portability of this technology has given GlobalNews.ca the chance to implement an enhanced editorial strategy centred on providing users up-to-the-minute content and breaking news, while engaging and interacting with viewers in real-time. Globalnews.ca will take Canadians beyond the daily headlines by providing more context, analysis, as well as cutting-edge investigative and data-driven journalism, while the implementation of a system of beats will make it possible to cultivate more high-value content and scoops on a regular basis.
“This is not a re-launch, it’s a ‘from-the-ground-up’ reinvention of how we do digital news. We’ve come up with some real innovations in real-time and original reporting, which is the future of news.” says Ron Waksman, Senior Director of Online and Current Affairs. “Many people here have been working tirelessly to set a new standard that puts the needs of news consumers first. The new Globalnews.ca is the ultimate in portability providing our audience with the best possible Global News experience on any device at any time.”
