CHUM Limited launches Citytv Vancouver at 6 am July 22, bringing the company’s signature intensely-local, urban-oriented, culturally-diverse style to Canada’s second-largest English-speaking market.
Proudly joining other Citytv-styled stations around the globe – including the original in Toronto – the Vancouver station is the second Citytv in Canada. Moses Znaimer, CHUMCity President / Executive Producer and Citytv co-founder, describes the station as “a kind of mirror. If you pick it up and put it in the middle of Vancouver,” (or Toronto or Bogotá or Barcelona – as he has done), “its job is to reflect Vancouver” (or Toronto or Bogotá or Barcelona – as it has done).
“It’s what has been missing from Vancouver – television that’s local, that is an integral part of the city’s life,” says Vice President and General Manager Brad Phillips. “We’re going to serve our viewers in a revolutionary way. With an average of 29 hours of local programming each week, Citytv will reshape Vancouver television as we know it.”
Breakfast Television will take an irreverent, affectionate look at the city as it springs to life each weekday morning. Wake up laughing to all the essentials: news, weather, traffic, sports, and all the people and events that make Vancouver great. CityPulse News will be thorough, immediate, and incisive – offering unprecedented coverage with an unbuttoned perspective. Great Movies will bring blockbusters and favourites into the city’s living rooms each afternoon, in primetime, and all through the night. Speakers Corner – the original reality show – will give everyone the chance to speak and be seen.
With a commitment currently unrivalled by conventional Canadian broadcasters, Citytv’s multicultural programming will explore and celebrate the cultural diversity that infuses Vancouver with its distinctive appeal. diverseCity, a weekly half-hour talk show, will look at the real-life experiences of Vancouver’s second and third generation multicultural population. Ethnosonic will showcase the world’s culturally-fluid music scene with Vancouver DJ-turned-VJ Trevor Chan. And CityCooks will explore culture through cuisine – an anthropological look at flavours and food trends from across the city and around the world.
