An independent TV station in Swift Current is closing its doors. CJFB will shut down on May 31, and 15 employees will lose their jobs.

Julie Forst has owned the station since it went on the air 45 years ago, but she says times have changed in broadcasting, and it’s difficult to make money in a small market like Swift Current.
To be able to keep up with the advancement in television, we would have to switch to digital equipment, Forst says. That would be cost-prohibitive in Swift Current.
Viewers in the Swift Current area will still get to see programming on CJFB’s Channel Five. The station is a CBC affiliate, and the public broadcaster has purchased the station’s transmitters, to maintain its signal in southwest Saskatchewan.
That means viewers will no longer get a local Swift Current newscast, but they’ll see CBC Saskatchewan provincial news instead.
