On Saturday, Canada looks to build on its medal count on the rink in Olympic competition. Charles Hamelin looks to rebound in the Men’s 1,000m Short Track after a disappointing 5,000m relay, while Denny Morrison is an early favourite in the Men’s 1,500m Speed Skating after a silver medal in the 1,000m.

OLYMPIC MORNING:
SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING: WOMEN’S 1500M AND MEN’S 1000M (6 – 7:30 a.m. ET) on CBC
Women’s 1,500m: South Korean Seung-Hi Park, 2013 World Champion and bronze medallist in Vancouver, will aim to get the missing gold. Chinese Jianrou Li will be her strongest opponent. Valérie Maltais, Marianne St-Gelais and Marie Eve Drolet will compete for Canada.
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY: FINLAND VS. SWEDEN QUARTER-FINAL (7:15 – 10 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet
Finland and Sweden do battle with the winner advancing to face the USA in the Semifinal.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: USA VS. RUSSIA PRELIMINARY ROUND (7:30 – 10 a.m. ET) on CBC
USA vs. Russia has the makings of a classic game, with big stakes as both of these teams are top medal contenders.
SPEED SKATING: MEN’S 1,500M FINAL (8:30 – 10:25 a.m. ET) on TSN

All eyes will be on Canada’s Denny Morrison, who held the 1,500m world record until it was broken by Shani Davis of the U.S. Davis is a two time Olympic silver medallist (2006 and 2010) who has trained in Canada at the Calgary Oval in the past. These two skaters renew their rivalry on their quest for gold.

So far in the 2013-2014 season, the Latvian Dukurs brothers, Martin and Tomass, have claimed the top two spots in three straight events. Canadian Eric Neilson finished fourth at the 2013 World Championships, and John Fairbairn of Calgary rounds out the Canadian contingent.

The impressive Canadian team, skipped by Jennifer Jones, goes up against the hometown favourites.

Simon Ammann won both individual events in Vancouver 2010, and did the same in Salt Lake City in 2002. He is a threat even if he did not have a great last season. Peter Prevc of Slovenia is the 2013 World silver medallist and the older of three Prevc brothers who compete for Slovenia. Mackenzie Boyd Blowes, Dusty Korek, Trevor Morrice and Matthew Rowley will represent Canada.
