The official start to Summer is set for Tuesday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET when the remarkable sixth edition of Canadian Idol premieres on CTV (go to idol.CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times). Over the past five years, Canadian Idol has changed the lives of hundreds of singers, and the Canadian music industry as well. Last year, nearly 15 million Canadians watched some part of Canadian Idol, more than 50% of Canada’s English-language population.* Now, Summer’s #1 program returns with the first of three audition episodes featuring new cast member Jully Black and the best and worst performances captured from this year’s cross-Canada audition tour. Nearly 10,000 tried out, but only one will continue through the Top 10 and into September, when the newest Canadian Idol winner will be crowned. In the meantime, get ready for another roller coaster musical ride, including a dramatic format switch-up that will change the course of the series this summer.

CTV revealed a summer schedule today starring this summer's most buzzed-about new series, High School Musical: Summer Session. The competitive reality series joins a sizzling summer schedule jam-packed with 15 new or returning series, adding up to more than 175 hours of fresh, new content to be seen seven nights a week on CTV. The schedule officially kicks off on Thursday, May 22 with the return of summertime favourite So You Think You Can Dance. Anchoring it all is summer's most-watched series, Canadian Idol, which returns for its sixth unprecedented season on Tuesday, June 3.

As Goldberg discovers, many endure painful surgery, growth hormones, discrimination and problems attracting a partner as a result of their height. On the “heels” of its world premiere at the internationally-renowned documentary film festival Hot Docs, S&M: Short and Male will have its television premiere Saturday, May 24 at 7 p.m. on CTV.

CTV announced today the additional So You Think You Can Dance Canada judges set to spark dance fever across the country. Making their debut at the Halifax auditions on Monday, May 5 is star choreographer Melissa Williams from Windsor, ON, who has worked with such artists as Prince and Bryan Adams, and special guest judge Dan Karaty from the hit U.S. series So You Think You Can Dance. Calgary native Sean Cheesman, the current host and lead judge of the U.K. dance competition Dirty Dancing: Time of Your Life, will make his debut as a special guest judge in Calgary on Monday, May 12.

The day after Canadian Idol’s 2008 cross-country audition tour wrapped up in Toronto, CTV announced that the search for Canada’s next Idol is heading into cyberspace, allowing singers in any part of the country with access to a computer to audition for this year’s competition. It’s only the second time in the history of the Idol franchise that competitors have had the opportunity to audition online, marking yet another North American first for Canadian Idol. By extending the breadth of the national search, producers are now offering every eligible Canadian the opportunity for exposure and a chance to start a professional music career, no matter where they live. Beginning today and lasting until Friday, April 25 at 5 p.m. ET, online Idol competitors simply need to upload video tryouts to the Canadian Idol website, idol.CTV.ca.

Two of the most respected musicians in the world will collaborate on an extraordinary new television series, it was announced today. Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… will be hosted by its namesake and produced in conjunction with Sir Elton John’s Rocket Pictures. Elton John will be one of the program's Executive Producers. Conceived and developed in Canada, the Canada/United Kingdom co-production will start shooting soon for broadcast later this year on CTV in Canada, Channel 4 in the UK and Sundance Channel in the US. FremantleMedia Enterprises will handle sales of the show to the rest of the world.

Oprah’s Big Give debuted BIG on CTV last night when 1.7 million viewers tuned in to the series premiere. The entertaining and heart-warming addition to CTV’s spring schedule was the most-watched program of the day nationally among total viewers as well as the key advertising demos A25-54 (1.01 million) and A18-49 (960,000). The program was also No. 1 among total viewers and A25-54 in Toronto and Vancouver.

As the two-year countdown to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games begins on Feb. 12, CTV marks the occasion with extensive coverage of the Olympic celebrations. Between Feb.11 and 15, CTV will deliver a complete and comprehensive look at how Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., are preparing for the Games, and the lasting impact the Olympics will have on Canadians. Leading the way is CTV’s Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Lloyd Robertson, who will helm two special editions of CTV National News with Lloyd Robertson live from Vancouver on Monday, Feb. 11 and Tuesday Feb. 12 on CTV at 11 p.m. (check CTV.ca for local broadcast times). CTV’s Canada AM will also join in on the Olympic celebration with two special Olympic broadcasts from Whistler and Vancouver.

Jericho and Welcome to the Captain are the latest primetime network series to join the CTV schedule following the announcement earlier today that the fifth season of Nip/Tuck would premiere immediately CTV’s exclusive broadcast of Super Bowl XLII. The three new series join additional new series Lost, Eli Stone and Dexter, which will all premiere on CTV throughout the next month. Additionally, CTV announced today that the one-hour music special Celine Dion: That’s Just the Woman in Me will join special event programming over the next four weeks that also includes Super Bowl XLII and The 80th Annual Academy Awards along the with the CTV Original Mini-Series Would Be Kings and the CTV Original Movie Mayerthorpe.

Robert Hurst, President of CTV News and Current Affairs, announced today that starting on Monday, January 28, CTV’s Canada AM will expand to six hours and go live in every Canadian market. This is the first time a national North American morning show on a conventional network will be totally live across all time zones. As part of the new format, Canada AM will now deliver more live national and local news. Hurst also announced that Canada AM will expand its on-air family with the addition of a Western anchor team – out of a new Vancouver studio.

CTV has announced details of the sixth cross-country audition tour for Canada's #1 Summer Series, beginning this month, as the 2008 Audition Tour gets set to kick off Saturday, January 26 at the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton. As announced last night on eTalk, the 10-city tour will cross the country, hitting malls in nine more cities through mid-April. In a Canadian Idol first, the hometown of reigning Idol Brian Melo - Hamilton, Ontario - has been added as a stop on the 2008 Audition Tour.

CTV announced today that it has ordered two new, one-hour original drama series for the network. The first is Sniper (working title), a high-stakes ensemble drama that delves into the world of one of Canada’s elite police forces and the critical incidents it faces on a daily basis. The second is The Listener, a fast-paced, compelling drama about a young paramedic with the power to read minds. Both series received orders from the network for 13, one-hour episodes with production scheduled to begin in Spring 2008.
