General News: CRTC imposes strict conditions on TQS transaction, to be revisited in 2011

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today approved, subject to certain conditions, Remstar Diffusion inc.'s (Remstar) acquisition of the TQS Network and television stations in Montreal, Quebec, Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke and Saguenay. The Commission has also renewed the licences of these stations until 2015, but will re-examine the programming commitments after three years.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today denied HDTV Networks Inc.'s (HDTV Networks) application for a licence to operate a national, English-language high-definition conventional television service. In addition, the CRTC today denied YES TV Inc.'s application for a licence to operate an English-language high-definition conventional television
service in the Greater Toronto Area.

General News: Poll shows a strong majority of canadians support made-in-canada television

At today's CRTC hearings on the future of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF), actors joined producers, writers and directors to release results from a new poll showing that a strong majority (71%) of Canadians believe it is important to have access to Canadian television programming distinct from American programs. The poll also reveals that an overwhelming majority of Canadians feel the government and cable and satellite TV companies should invest resources to help ensure that Canadians have access to television programs that reflect Canada and its people.

General News: C.R.T.C. approves the purchase of CHUM Ltd. by CTVGlobemedia, excluding Citytv stations

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today approved the transfer of effective control of CHUM Ltd. (CHUM) to CTVglobemedia Inc. (CTVgm). The CRTC did not approve the transfer of five Citytv stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver to CTVgm, given that such transfer would be inconsistent with the Commission’s common ownership policy. That policy stipulates that a licensee may not operate more than one conventional television station in one language in a given market.
