The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today denied HDTV Networks Inc.'s (HDTV Networks) application for a licence to operate a national, English-language high-definition conventional television service. In addition, the CRTC today denied YES TV Inc.'s application for a licence to operate an English-language high-definition conventional television
service in the Greater Toronto Area.

General News: Poll shows a strong majority of canadians support made-in-canada television

At today's CRTC hearings on the future of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF), actors joined producers, writers and directors to release results from a new poll showing that a strong majority (71%) of Canadians believe it is important to have access to Canadian television programming distinct from American programs. The poll also reveals that an overwhelming majority of Canadians feel the government and cable and satellite TV companies should invest resources to help ensure that Canadians have access to television programs that reflect Canada and its people.

General News: C.R.T.C. approves the purchase of CHUM Ltd. by CTVGlobemedia, excluding Citytv stations

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today approved the transfer of effective control of CHUM Ltd. (CHUM) to CTVglobemedia Inc. (CTVgm). The CRTC did not approve the transfer of five Citytv stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver to CTVgm, given that such transfer would be inconsistent with the Commission’s common ownership policy. That policy stipulates that a licensee may not operate more than one conventional television station in one language in a given market.

You probably know that some of the subscription fees you are paying for cable or satellite service goes to the channels you subscribe to. What you may not know is that the public or private conventional networks like CTV, CBC, Citytv don’t receive a dime from subscription fees. Today marked the start of the public hearing to discuss and review the regulatory framework for over-the-air television in Canada and from what was mentioned in day 1 of the hearing, public and private broadcasters want the ability to charge for the transmission of their signal, which could have an important impact to what you’re currently paying for your cable and satellite subscriptions.

General News: CRTC exempts mobile television services from regulation

In a public notice released today, the Commission ruled that mobile television services which offer television programming accessible through a wireless handset, such as a cell phone, are exempt from regulation. The Commission determined that the services provided by Bell Mobility Inc., Rogers Wireless Inc. and TELUS Mobility, in conjunction with MobiTV Inc., fall within the Commission’s New Media Exemption Order, which applies to services that are delivered and accessed over the Internet.

General News: Revenues for Canadian specialty, pay, and pay-per-view television services exceed the $2 billion mark

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has released the financial results for specialty, pay and pay-per-view television in Canada for the years 2000 to 2004. This sector has experienced significant growth in terms of both revenues and profits. Revenues for the 115 Canadian services grew by close to $170 million, or 9%, between 2003 and 2004, going from $1.88 to 2.05 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes rose from $284.8 to 418.1 million, an increase of 46.8%. The operating margin reached 22.04, while the EBIT margin rose to 20.39 in 2004.
