Programming highlights for 2004-2005.

A channel dedicated to meeting the people, cultures and ideas that have shaped our common past, and those that will dictate our future,

Discovery Civilization returns with two of its most popular anthologies:

On The Edge
On The Edge delves into the issues faced by human societies throughout the world today. These gritty, provocative stories present both sides of the debate on everything from sex and religion to crime and punishment. Throughout the ages, civilizations the world over have created amazing monuments and practiced esoteric rites.

Pyramids, Mummies And Tombs
Pyramids, Mummies And Tombs explores the mysteries and histories of these extraordinary structures and rituals, from the great pyramids of Egypt, to the oldest mummies in the world, found in Chile.

Two new series that will debut in the fall are:

Extreme Tribes
Extreme Tribes, which delves into a world where extreme is the norm, a place where skiing and snowboarding off the most extreme mountain is all in a day’s outing, where the only law obeyed and revered is gravity.

Ancient Evidence
Fresh insights into the major characters and events described in the Christian Bible, the Torah and the Koran are explored in Ancient Evidence, premiering Wed., Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. Each story-driven episode in the 10-part series transports viewers back to biblical times by reconstructing, through the eye of science and computer-generated animation, unprecedented detail about the lives and times of revered religious leaders, and momentous or catastrophic events.

Each of the 10 episodes focuses on a specific biblical event or character. By unveiling new findings from scientific, archaeological and historical perspectives, Ancient Evidence attempts to determine whether or not these famous stories are factually and historically accurate.

DISCIPLES episode: Group shot of the disciples

Included among the questions Ancient Evidence examines are:
· Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute or an early Christian fundraiser who had a close relationship with Jesus?
· How did Peter make the transition from denying Jesus to a Christian leader who kept the church afloat?
· After Jesus‘ death, Paul turned a minor Jewish sect into a world religion – how did he plant the seeds of Christianity across the Mediterranean?
· Is the Book of Revelations a vivid description of the end of the world, or is it fiction, heavily influenced by the writer’s companions and the politics of his time?
· Was David, slayer of Goliath, a humble shepherd or born a nobleman?
· Who killed Jesus? Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate, temple priests and the judicial system all had motives and methods.

The prime time series guides viewers back to biblical times using re-creations filmed on location in Morocco, Egypt, Israel and Greece, supplemented with computer-generated animation.

Journey back through time with Discovery Civilization to revel in humanity‘s defining moments. Meet the people, cultures and ideas that have shaped our common past, and those that will dictate our future. Discovery Civilization is about learning where we came from and knowing where we can go.
