Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker, Jon Blair, Reporters at War weaves together news stories from the Iraq war with those from previous conflicts to assess how the battle between military and the media has evolved over the years. Beginning with Witness to History (July 12), this episode examines how patriotism and the quest for truth have intersected, and sometimes collided, giving new insight into the coverage of wars. While many war correspondents thrive on the thrill of battle, others aren’t so lucky. Dying for the Story (July 13), illustrates how business and journalistic decisions intersect, often endangering the lives of reporters who are on the front lines. From the internet to other communications technologies, the new tools of war journalism are examined in Bringing It All Back Home (July 14). Video-satellite phones and night-vision cameras are as much a part of modern war reporting as the flak jacket. Now reporters can file from almost anywhere and news organizations can keep up with an audience that demands information 24/7. Focusing on the war in Iraq, the final installment of this series, Wars, Lies and Videotapes (July 15), looks at the attempts by both the coalition and the Iraqis to control the media. It also examines the inherently confrontational relationships between the media and the military, and how with each conflict, the two sides have tried to outsmart each other.
