Employees at A-Channel Edmonton walked out of their jobs yesterday after turning down the companies latest contract offer the previous day. This comes after more than a year of negotiations on their first unionized contract.
The union is fighting for a 12% pay raise over 3 years and to keep some jobs from being sent from Edmonton to A-Channel Calgary. Currently the average annual wage for A-Channel Edmonton employees is $28,000.
A-Channel employees joined the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada in July 2002 and are part of local 1900 which includes three televisions stations in the Edmonton market. With 305 members they are the largest broadcasting local west of Toronto.
A-Channel is owned by Craig Media Inc., which also owns other broadcasting outlets, including A-Channel stations in Winnipeg and Calgary, Toronto 1 (launching Sept. 19), Stampede, TV Land Canada, MTV2 Canada and MTV Canada.
