Stitch Media and OMNI Television partner on Chinese Head Tax Redress documentary and web project Production news / OMNI1 Posted by RAD on Jun 08, 2009 - 06:29 PM Stitch Media and OMNI Television announced today that they are partnering on a new project that tackles one of the most controversial Canadian government decisions of our time: the official 2006 apology to the Chinese Canadian community. Filming on the three-part documentary component of the project will begin in Vancouver and move across the country while an interactive website is also being developed concurrently. "The Canadian government’s 2006 apology to the Chinese Canadian community was a landmark decision. It sparked debate nationally and internationally, but at the same time focused attention on an issue that was not widely recognized amongst Canadians,” says Victoria Ha, Producer, Stitch Media. “We want to explore all the facets of this issue in a fresh and new approach so that these important stories are not a forgotten part of our history.” Video artist Lesley Loksi Chan (Wanda and Miles, I No I No) is onboard to direct the documentary. Chan is a multiple award winner at festivals such as Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and the Images Festival. “We are especially pleased to have Lesley Loksi Chan as our director; her sensitivity to the subject matter in combination with her award-winning use of imagery and animation, will ensure that these important personal stories reach young Canadians in a meaningful way, ” comments Ha. "As we approach our 30th anniversary we are pleased to play an integral role in making sure this historical project will resonate across culture and generation." To allow audiences to contribute to a ‘living documentary’ experience, the three-part documentary will be accompanied by an interactive website developed by the award-winning team at Halifax-based, Stitch Media. The documentary is produced by Victoria Ha for Stitch Media Inc. and Executive Produced by David Smith of S & S Productions with support from OMNI Television and the participation of CHIRP Canada. The interactive site is produced by Evan Jones for Stitch Media in association with the Bell New Media Fund and OMNI’s Independent Producers Initiative.
