Some of Canada’s best-known personalities from a variety of fields are inviting Canadians to protect nature in their daily lives. Broadcaster and scientist David Suzuki, Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean, National Ballet of Canada’s Karen Kain, comic Mary Walsh, and children’s author Robert Munsch launched David Suzuki’s Nature Challenge last November.
"I invite all Canadians, including our political leaders, to take the Nature Challenge," said Dr. Suzuki.
The Nature Challenge offers simple ways for Canadians to take responsibility for themselves and their environment. The David Suzuki Foundation has researched the 10 most effective ways individuals can conserve nature and is challenging all Canadians to read the list, agree to do at least three of the 10 over the coming year, and sign up online.
With such a diverse group of well-known Canadians taking the Challenge, Dr. Suzuki hopes that people will realize how important it is protect nature.
"In our busy lives most of us have forgotten that it is nature that supports everything that we do," says Dr. Suzuki. "By leaving nature outside of our day-to-day decision making we are seriously damaging the environment and threatening our quality of life. By taking the Nature Challenge, we can all make a difference and protect the environment for our children and grandchildren."
Research has shown that Canadians want to conserve the environment but are unsure of what they can do. By joining the Nature Challenge, Canadians will learn practical ways to make a difference. Each month the David Suzuki Foundation will send an email newsletter with tips to help those who have signed up. Suggestions such as eating food from local producers and walking to one of your regular destinations offer easy ways of protecting farmland and natural areas, ensuring cleaner water and air, stabilizing the climate, and creating healthier communities.
