Rogers Cabe Now Over 70 Strong in Multicultural Channels Providers News / Rogers Cable Posted by RAD on Oct 08, 2008 - 06:16 PM Rogers Cable Communications Inc. today announced it has expanded its multicultural programming lineup to 78 channels in more than 20 languages. In the past two months alone, four new ethnic services have been launched, bringing Rogers to this milestone. With the latest Canadian census indicating Canada’s foreign-born population proportion is at its highest in 75 years, and with one in five citizens reporting their mother tongue is neither English nor French[1], it’s fitting that Rogers long-standing tradition of offering the most multicultural channels continues to this day. “In a diverse country like Canada, we’re setting the bar higher by offering the most multicultural channels,” said David Purdy, Vice President of Video Product Management for Rogers Cable. “Rogers is committed to providing choice to our customers and delivering programming that reflects our ethnic diversity. We are dedicated to bringing services from around the world home, ultimately helping our customers stay connected with places of importance to them.” Rogers commitment to multicultural programming began in September 1972 when it became the first Canadian cable provider to dedicate airtime on a community channel for under-serviced ethnic communities. The Toronto-based station, Channel 33 (whose innovative concept led to OMNI Television), carried Greek, Italian, Portuguese, East Indian, Asian and Croatian programming. Additional channels premiered throughout the 80’s and 90’s and in September 2001, the company launched a record nine multicultural channels. This stands as the biggest single-day introduction of new services in Rogers history. By January 2006, the company offered 43 multicultural channels and less than three years later, Rogers has reached a landmark offering of over 70 channels. The four recently-inaugurated services are as diverse as the Canadian landscape itself: TL Novelas América (channel 576) is a Spanish-language service broadcasting six Mexican soap operas per day; SunTV (channel 619) is a Tamil-language general entertainment service offering everything from blockbuster movies, soaps and live news to serials, game shows, and music programs; New Tang Dynasty TV (channel 630) is an independent Chinese broadcaster with over fifty reporting stations around the world offering news, cultural variety shows, educational programs, sporting events, entertainment shows and business programs; and GMA Pinoy TV (channel 646) is a Tagalog-language (Filipino) general entertainment service offering award-winning, top-rated programming from entertainment shows and soap operas to internationally-acclaimed public affairs programming.
