"Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas any more."
To the bean counters at MGM, it was an expensive flop. Today it's a classic, beloved by moviegoers of all ages.
On Thursday, Oct. 30 at 9 p.m. and Midnight ET / 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. PT, VisionTV presents The Wizard of Oz, one of the greatest and most iconic fantasy films of all time.
A lavish 1939 adaptation of the L. Frank Baum children's book, The Wizard of Oz stars a heartbreakingly young and vulnerable Judy Garland as Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl who is swept "over the rainbow" by a tornado and deposited in the magical land of Oz.
With the help of her loyal pup Toto and her newfound friends The Scarecrow, The Cowardly Lion and The Tin Man (expertly played by vaudevillians Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley), Dorothy sets out to find the one man who can help her return home: the wonderful Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan). But first she must escape the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), whose army of sinister flying monkeys has brought nightmares to many generations of young viewers.
Ranked number six on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest American movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz was helmed by several different directors (Gone With the Wind's Victor Fleming got the final credit). The tumultuous behind-the-scenes story of its making has become, over the years, almost as famous as the film itself.
The score by Herbert Stothart and the unforgettable original song "Over the Rainbow" (with music by Harold Arlen) were Oscar winners. Strange but true: Singer Amy Winehouse is said to be working on a new album inspired by the music of The Wizard of Oz.
