Do height-challenged men come up short against their counterparts when it comes to love, work and life? In the new CTV Original Documentary S&M: Short and Male, short-statured filmmaker Howard Goldberg travels the world, exposing the trials and tribulations of life as a short man. As Goldberg discovers, many endure painful surgery, growth hormones, discrimination and problems attracting a partner as a result of their height. On the “heels” of its world premiere at the internationally-renowned documentary film festival Hot Docs, S&M: Short and Male will have its television premiere Saturday, May 24 at 7 p.m. on CTV.

On a journey that takes him from Montreal to Beijing, Goldberg compares the experiences, frustrations and desperate measures some men go through for a little extra height. In the case of seven-year-old Graham, his parents make the decision to give him growth hormones – without knowing if there are long-term risks involved – in order to give him what they believe is a chance at a more normal life.

In an equally extreme case, 12-year-old Akash travels to the Institute for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction in New York City, where he undergoes leg lengthening surgery. This slow and agonizing process includes breaking Akash’s bones and inserting metal screws into them that are turned, creating spaces that the bone grows into and lengthens.

Surely open minded, educated people don’t harbour discriminatory thoughts towards short men? And yet, by having people take a new sophisticated test, viewers find that most people, Goldberg included, all appear to have a bias against shorter men.

Goldberg also discovers that, surprisingly, sexual attraction and an ability to earn a living are directly linked to a man’s height. Dr. Gad Saad, an Evolutionary Psychologist from Concordia University, explains that the importance of a man’s height to a woman changes dependent on where she is in her menstrual cycle.

Finally, it seems that height directly relates to what men earn for a living. The average Fortune 500 exec measures in at six feet tall – three inches above what is considered to be average height for a man. Shockingly, the difference in wages between tall and short men averages out to more than U.S. $1,000 an inch.

S&M: Short and Male is produced by Instinct Films in association with CTV, directed and edited by Howard Goldberg, and produced by Ina Fichman. Bob Culbert is Vice-President of CTV Documentaries. Robert Hurst is President of CTV News and Current Affairs. Susanne Boyce is President, Content, Creative and Channels, CTV Inc.
