Insight Sports and Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that for the second consecutive year, GolTV Canada will broadcast live coverage of the Whitecaps’ international friendly match against Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy featuring David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The match is scheduled to take place at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

In support of this game, selected cable providers will have GolTV Canada available on free preview for the entire day. Canadians can tune in to watch the match on Rogers Personal TV, channels 1, 59 and 428 in Ontario and channel 43 in New Brunswick; Cogeco Cable, channel 122; and EastLink, channel 117.

GolTV Canada’s broadcast team for the match will feature Lee Godfrey handling the play-by-play duties and former Canadian men’s national team member and Vancouver 86ers goalkeeper Paul Dolan serving as an analyst.

Last year in November, GolTV Canada aired live coverage of the Whitecaps’ 0-0 draw with the Galaxy. The match was played before nearly 50,000 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver.

“David Beckham continues to be one of the biggest draws in soccer and we are thrilled to once again provide viewers with live coverage of one of the must-see matches on the Canadian soccer calendar,” said Corey Russell, Vice President of Programming and Production for Insight Sports, a sports media and entertainment company which owns and operates GolTV Canada. “We’re looking forward to building on the success of last year’s match and we are committed to delivering a first rate broadcast to soccer fans across Canada.”

English international David Beckham and U.S. international Landon Donovan highlight the Galaxy’s roster. A midfielder with the Galaxy, Beckham’s resume includes three FIFA World Cups and 17 goals in 100 appearances for his country. In addition to his success with England, Beckham helped Real Madrid win Spain’s Primera Division during the 2006-2007 season and led Manchester United to six English Premier League titles, as well as the 1998-1999 UEFA Champions League. Donovan, a veteran of two FIFA World Cups, is the U.S. national team’s all-time scorer with 35 goals in 99 appearances. The forward has won three MLS Cup titles, including the 2005 championship with the Galaxy.

Founded in 1996, the Galaxy are widely considered to be one of the most successful clubs in the 14-team MLS, having won MLS Cups titles in 2002 and 2005 and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and 2005. They also won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup in 2000.

The Whitecaps play in the 11-team United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1). Vancouver’s roster includes Canadian international Adrian Cann, Jeff Clarke, Steve Kindel and Martin Nash. The Whitecaps last won the USL-1 Championship in 2006.
