TSN Unveils 2007/08 NHL National Broadcast Schedule

Sports Programming / TSN
Posted by RAD on Sep 25, 2007 - 10:28 AM

TSN today unveiled its comprehensive 2007/08 NHL on TSN national broadcast package, which features 70 regular season games highlighted by increased coverage of the Canadian clubs, three all-Canadian match-ups, 38 games in High Definition, the weekly staple Wednesday Night Hockey, the addition of analyst Mike Milbury, the return of Molson That's Hockey, extensive preview shows, five Toronto Maple Leafs regional broadcasts, and the first three rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs*. With today's announcement, TSN reinforces the fact that, once
again, Hockey Lives Here!

TSN is coming off one of its most successful NHL broadcast seasons ever last year, as Playoff audiences increased 11 per cent throughout the first three rounds, while the regular season was the network's second-most watched NHL campaign in 11 years. In addition, two NHL on TSN broadcasts last year cracked the network's Top 10 list of most watched NHL games, including the season opener featuring Ottawa @ Toronto with 1.33 million viewers.

Broadcast Schedule
TSN's 70-game broadcast schedule features 40 match-ups involving Canadian teams, up from 36 last season. Wednesdays continue to be appointment television on TSN as Wednesday Night Hockey returns to the network with 30 games, 21 of which involve a Canadian team. (See broadcast schedule below.)

TSN's NHL coverage gets underway on Wednesday, Oct. 3 - first night of the season in North America - with the battle of Ontario featuring Ottawa @ Toronto, beginning at 7 p.m. ET with the pre-game show. Adding further excitement to the evening, during the second intermission, NHL on TSN will reveal the consensus choice of NHL GMs - determined by a special TSN pool - to win the Stanley Cup this season.

TSN's increased Canadian team coverage includes an additional two all-Canadian match-ups: Edmonton @ Vancouver on November 14 and Montreal @ Toronto on November 27.

The Montreal Canadiens headline the NHL on TSN broadcast schedule with 13 games, followed by Toronto with seven games, six match-ups for Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton, and five games for Vancouver. TSN will also televise an additional five Maple Leafs regional games this season (see Leafs regional broadcast schedule below).

Additional highlights of the NHL on TSN broadcast schedule include eight doubleheaders, six Original Six match-ups, and 13 games featuring last season's Hart-Ross-Pearson trophies winner Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Broadcast Team
NHL on TSN welcomes a new face to its lineup with the addition of former NHL player, coach and GM Mike Milbury as a studio analyst. Milbury will appear weekly on Wednesday Night Hockey throughout the regular season and during the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs*.

James Duthie returns as host of the NHL on TSN, alongside Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, commentator Dave Hodge, analyst Milbury, as well as Darren Dutchyshen, who will provide SportsCentre in-game updates and highlights from around the league. Pierre McGuire and Glenn Healy will appear frequently in-studio as analysts when not providing colour commentary for the games. McKenzie and Dreger will continue to provide their exclusive Insider reports on SportsCentre through the 2007/08 season.

TSN will use two broadcast teams for the network's extensive NHL coverage:
Gord Miller and McGuire will share duties with Chris Cuthbert and Healy. Building on their success from last season, TSN will once again use innovative techniques during its hockey broadcasts, utilizing the 1-Up/1-Down approach for 35 broadcasts and additional games using Front Row Centre. The 1-Up/1-Down technique has Miller/Cuthbert in the broadcast booth with McGuire/Healy providing analysis from between the benches at ice level, while Front Row Centre involves both the play-by-play announcer and game analyst calling the game between the benches from ice level.

The show will also feature an interview with New Jersey Devils' goaltender Martin Brodeur, the 2006/07 leader in TSN fantasy points.
