Augmenting Sportsnet’s coverage of baseball’s midsummer classic are reports from baseball expert Ken Rosenthal and Sportsnet Connected host R.J. Broadhead. This year’s edition of the MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby both take place at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Barry Bonds who patrols the outfield for the San Francisco Giants starts for the NL All-Stars and is the lone representative for the Giants. The Home Run Derby will be broadcast on Sportsnet West at 7 pm (MT) and on Sportsnet Pacific at 7 pm (PT). It will include the two reigning MVPs with Minnesota Twins’ first basemen Justin Morneau leading the AL squad while the NL side will feature Phillies’ first baseman Ryan Howard. The Toronto Blue Jays will send Alex Rios to San Francisco as a reserve on the AL All-Stars. The 26-year-old outfielder is enjoying a breakout season. Rios is on pace to set career marks for runs, hits and RBI and with 17 home runs has already match his personal best set last season. The 2006 AL Champion Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox lead the way with five players each on the AL roster. The Tigers contingent includes starters Placido Polanco (second base), Ivan Rodriguez (catcher) and Magglio Ordonez (outfield). The Red Sox lone starter is first baseman David Ortiz. The New York Yankees, barring injury, will have two starters on the AL squad in Derek Jeter (shortstop) and Alex Rodriguez (third base). Rounding out the AL starting roster are outfielders Vladimir Guerrero (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and Ichiro Suzuki (Seattle Mariners) The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets send four players each to San Francisco. The NL East-leading Mets have three starters – Jose Reyes (shortstop), David Wright (third base) and Carlos Beltran (outfield) – among the eight position players voted to start the All-Star Game by the fans. The Brewers only starter is first baseman Prince Fielder, son of former Blue Jay Cecil Fielder. Rounding out the NL squad are outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. (Cincinnati Reds), catcher Russell Martin (Los Angeles Dodgers) and second baseman Chase Utley (Philadelphia Phillies).
