The Arctic as we know it is disappearing. Under the threat of global warming, this vast expanse of water and ice and its inhabitants are facing unprecedented upheavals. But what if this Arctic transformation is not the predicted apocalypse of our planet but an opportunity to learn how best to live with a changing climate? Premiering exclusively on Discovery HD, “Beyond Global Warming” explores this hypothesis aboard the Canadian icebreaker Amundsen. This one-hour special airs Wed., July 4 at 8 p.m. ET/PT - three days before “Live Earth: The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis” (airing Sat., July 7 on CTV), a global concert event to raise awareness and combat climate change.
Just over a century after Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen went through the North-West Passage for the first time, the icebreaker that bears his name repeats this voyage - not to discover a new trade route but to study and evaluate the effects of climate change. With 40 scientists and researchers from around the world aboard the breaker, see what they discover about the impact of global warming on one of the coldest places on Earth.
Experts agree that the climate is changing at an unprecedented rate - and it’s happening twice as fast in the Arctic as the rest of the globe. These changes will have an environmental, socio-economical and geopolitical impact. See how this Arctic voyage prepares us to live with an evolving environment.
