Discovery Channel is a hit with Canadian viewers across key satisfaction categories, according to a recent national survey of audience attitudes. The 2006 TV Quality (TVQ) Survey, reveals that Discovery Channel is the top-ranked specialty channel (and second overall) for viewer satisfaction. Discovery Channel has consistently claimed top marks in viewer satisfaction since the survey's inception in 1997.
According to the survey results, 35.5 per cent of respondents gave top marks for overall viewer satisfaction, missing out on first place ranking by only .1 per cent. Discovery Channel also took the highest spot, at 28.4 per cent, of all specialty channels among survey respondents willing to pay $1 per month for the service, just behind three Canadian conventional networks (30.6 to 30.8 per cent), but well ahead of the major American conventional networks (18.9 to 21.1 per cent).
Discovery Channel received overwhelming kudos in the "best science and nature programming" category, claiming a 63 per cent satisfaction rating - besting its nearest competitor by 54 per cent! Discovery Channel was also the top Canadian service providing the "best documentary programming" category at 22 per cent, beating both History Television and CBC.
"I have always been proud of Discovery Channel's leadership role in specialty television. Not only are we consistently one of the most watched Canadian specialty channels but audiences have also consistently rated us No. 1 for quality over the years," said Paul Lewis, President and General Manager, Discovery Channel. "With an ever-increasing number of television channels, I'm thrilled that discerning viewers continue to make Discovery a key 'go to' destination for high quality entertainment."
The TVQ Survey also bore good news for the new specialty (digital) channels as well. This year's survey results saw Discovery Civilization Channel move up to No. 1 in overall viewer satisfaction among all digital channels. Both Animal Planet and Discovery Civilization Channel also ranked in the Top 5 new specialties worth paying $1 per month for.
The TV Trends and Quality (TVQ) Survey is a national survey of Canadians' attitudes toward television. The primary purpose of the TVQ Survey is to test consumer awareness of and satisfaction with conventional networks and specialty channels (both analog and digital) via cable TV, DTH or over-the-air. The TVQ Survey was conducted in October-December 2006 by BBM Analytics, a subsidiary of BBM (Bureau of Broadcast Measurement), among a sample of some 1,354 Anglophone and Francophone respondents aged 18-plus. The above-referenced results reflect the opinions of the 843 English-language respondents. The statistical margin of error in this survey is ± 2.6%, 19 times out of 20.
