Get Up, Stand Up
This Fall, journey back in time to witness the evolution of music and discover how it has shaped our society. The six-part series Get Up, Stand Up chronicles the history of music and popular culture. Each episode offers an emotionally-charged look at the power of music and its ability to shed light on the social and political issues that plague the world. From the war in Vietnam and the civil rights movement to the famine in Africa, this compelling series dissects the soundtrack of history. Featuring interviews with the music industry’s most revered artists, including singer/songwriter Bob Dylan and musician/philanthropist Bob Geldof, Get Up, Stand Up reveals how the intricate tapestry of history and music – woven through time – has influenced and defined generations.
The Real Family of Jesus
Jesus’ family. Who were they, how many family members, and what role – if any – did they play in his life as rebel leader and founder of a new religious movement? This Fall, Discovery Civilization Channel presents a special family reunion in the two-hour special The Real Family of Jesus, meeting the large extended family that played a critical part in Jesus' upbringing and in the rise and success of Christianity. Jesus was an only child in a nuclear family, the divine son of human parents Mary and Joseph. But 2,000 years ago, the influence of the “extended family” was the norm. Archaeological evidence and records in the gospels reveal that Jesus had a vast family network family that inspired and supported him throughout his life and spearheaded the spread of Christianity. The Real Family of Jesus chronicles the practical and moral backing of an extended family including his father Joseph and his mother Mary; his grandfather Joachim; his cousin John, the Baptist; his brothers Simon, Jude, Joseph and James; his uncle Clophas and his aunt Mary; and his nephew Simon and his great nephews Zoker and James. The picture of a dynastic family emerges – a family that believed it was descended directly from King David – and like all dynasties, it did everything in its power to promote and perpetuate its lineage. What they would never know is how well they succeeded.
Decisions That Shook the World
The course of a nation – and indeed world history – can hinge on a single moment. This Fall, Discovery Civilization Channel presents Decisions That Shook the World, a three-part series that looks at the defining moments of three 20th century American presidents. One episode examines the critical moment in 1963 as black Americans struggled against racial injustice and President John F. Kennedy’s proposed Civil Rights bill. When Kennedy was assassinated, new president Lyndon Baines Johnson was advised that pushing civil rights was politically dangerous; nevertheless he made it the cornerstone of his domestic program, a decision that would have a far-ranging impact on domestic and foreign affairs. Then, Decisions That Shook the World looks at the escalating Cold War tensions that were the hallmark of Ronald Regan’s presidency and how Reagan's unshakable faith in his ability to bring down the "Evil Empire" ultimately led to Soviet capitulation and the collapse of the Iron Curtain. The final episode in this series considers America’s entry into the Second World War – despite the fact that most citizens were against engaging in another European conflict, especially on the heels of the worst Depression in U.S. history. Yet President Franklin Delano Roosevelt knows that if Europe falls, America will be alone to face Hitler. Roosevelt must decide if he is prepared to do whatever he deems necessary to preserve and protect the United States – a decision that ultimately allowed for an Allied victory.
It Takes a Thief and Classic Albums return to Discovery Civilization Channel with new episodes this fall.
