Bravo announces fall programming highlights

Bravo! is pleased to announce its fall 2006 schedule preview. From a strip run of the crime drama series Without a Trace, to wonderful performances with tenor Andrea Bocelli and various talented sopranos in Duetti d’Amore: Andrea Bocelli in Concerto, to all-new episodes of Inside the Actors Studio, to a hilarious Woody Allen film festival, to the hit comedy HBO series Entourage – Bravo!'s fall season has something for every creative taste.

“We are very excited about Without a Trace joining Law and Order in our daily schedule. These two drama series epitomize ‘television as good as it gets.’ With great movies, including those from the Woody Allen film festival, Bravo! continues its fine cinema tradition,” says Ismé Bennie, Director of Programming and Acquisitions for Bravo!. “Inside the Actors Studio remains an audience favourite and we will air new episodes featuring such actors as Dustin Hoffman, Teri Hatcher and Al Pacino. Joan Rivers, Nigel Kennedy and The Celtic Tenors will join Andrea Bocelli in our Great Performers timeslot.”

Bravo! is a rest stop in the television universe where viewers make a regular APPOINTMENT WITH THE ARTS – and keep it. Each night on Bravo! a different arts genre is explored, featuring an eclectic mix of programs that are entertaining and inspiring: dance, music, drama, literature, cinema, great performers and visuals arts. Whether it’s a classic opera, or Paul Anka performing on the Gemini Award-winning Live at the Rehearsal Hall series, or cutting-edge films on Friday Night Flix, Bravo! gives viewers an opportunity for thought-provoking and enriching experiences.

Monday - Appointment with Dance

Appointment With Dance showcases the art form, from Irish dancing to modern works. Viewers can watch a classic ballet, or take in a program featuring their favourite dance stars both past and present.

Ballet Girls
World Television Premieres

This three-part documentary follows aspiring ballerinas from across Canada as they strive to land the coveted role of Clara in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. The journey of these ballet hopefuls is captured from the moment they attend open call auditions and discover the demanding schedule in the world of professional ballet, to the final moment when a dancer makes her debut performance on opening night.

Tuesday - Appointment with Music

Appointment With Music showcases the musical styles of classic big band swingers to contemporary pop musicians. Take a front row seat at great concerts, explore the life of your favourite artist in a biographical film or documentary, or watch your favourite movie musical.

Buffy Sainte-Marie: A Multimedia Life
World Television Premiere

This one-hour documentary explores the dynamic life and career of this Academy Award-winning musical pioneer. From her Aboriginal roots, to her folk music performances in 1960s Greenwich Village, to her roles as an educator and activist, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s journey is documented through archival footage and interviews with Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Randy Bachman, Steppenwolf’s John Kay, Taj Mahal and Sylvia Tyson. Legendary artists including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Cher , Janis Joplin and Neil Diamond have also recorded hits penned by the songwriter of Up Where We Belong.

Wednesday - Appointment with Drama

Bravo! takes you behind the curtain. Canadian films, documentaries and theatre programs comprise the great selection that is Appointment With Drama.

King O'Fun
World Television Premiere

Gemini award-winner Andy Jones stars as the title character who strives to recreate the funniest moment in Western Civilization. As Andy pursues this comedic feat, he accidentally finds an open door leading to the “Whisgiggan Dimension.” If he walks through the doorway, he will be transported to a world which could save him from an early death caused by poor eating habits. Andy Jones showcases his unique physical comedy and Newfoundland satire in this one-hour performance special. He is also known for his work in the Newfoundland comedy troupe CODCO and as a writer for Kids in the Hall.

The Fringe - Actimg Up
Bravo! Television Premiere

This fast-paced one-hour documentary follows the ups and downs of a diverse group of young actors as they compete for audience and media attention at North America’s largest theatre festival held in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona District. This festival was inspired by the original Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland over 50 years ago. The competitors receive performance tips from comedic actors and Fringe Festival veterans including Joe Flaherty (SCTV), Ron Pederson (Mad TV) and Josh Dean (Free Ride), and strive to obtain fame and fortune in the comedy world.

Thursday - Appointment with Literature

From the writers, editors and publishers, to those who market and review the final product, Appointment With Literature explores the written word.

Originating in 1940s Quebec , Michel Tremblay’s characters and universal stories have spanned the world and his work has been translated into over 15 languages and staged in many countries including Canada, Scotland, Turkey, Australia , Sweden , Japan and the United States . Michel Tremblay captures the essence of human drama and provides a voice for Quebec culture. The documentary looks at the origins and transformations of Tremblay’s characters, and the actors who perform these characters in his plays.

More than just movies, Appointment With Cinema is programming for both the movie buff and novice.

Woody Allen Festival
The witty and influential films of this New York-based actor, screenwriter and director are showcased for 13 weeks beginning this fall. Some of this multi-talented Oscar-winner’s cinematic masterpieces include: Interiors, A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, Zelig, Broadway Danny Rose, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says I Love You, Deconstructing Harry, Radio Days, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Sweet and Lowdown.

Remembering Arthur
World Television Premiere

Filmmaker Arthur Lipsett’s close friend, Martin Lavut, documents the influence of the eccentric Oscar-nominated film genius. The world of cinema tragically lost Lipsett in 1986 when the Montreal-born artist committed suicide two weeks before his 50th birthday. This one-hour documentary celebrates the life and influence of one of Canada’s greatest creative minds who began his filmmaking career at the National Film Board.

The incredible voice of this renowned tenor is paired with the melodic sounds of several talented sopranos including Raffaella Angeletti, Annamaria Dell’Oste, Desirée Rancatore and Patrizia Orciani. Steven Mercurio conducts the Orchestra del Teatro Vittorio Emanuele of Messina at the Greek Amphitheatre Taormina. The arias performed include Giacomo Puccini’s works from Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La Bohème and La Traviata, as well arias penned by Pietro Mascagni, Franz Lehár, Umberto Giordano and Gaetano Donizetti.

Through Wasserman’s lengthy career, he made an impression with his renowned deal-making and fiery temper, and used fear and politics to control the entire entertainment industry.

This incredible drama brings to life the struggle for recognition in the late 19th century for the French Impressionists. Based on an extensive collection of letters, documentary support and interviews with Claude Monet himself, this in-depth depiction of these talented artists explores how they dealt with poverty, immense social turmoil and their battles against the art establishment. The drama stars Julian Glover (Troy; Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) as the 80-year old Monet who reflects on his younger self, played by Richard Armitage (Cold Feet; North and South).
